Puree to BLW?

Hiya

I have done a few threads as so much I wanna know So lo has cmpi and reflux and has been on puree since 4 months under supervision of dietician and paediatrician. She loves her food and is doing well. She has fruit of a morning and veg of an afternoon or evening and used to have approx half a jar at a time but is wanting more but she suffers terrible with wind so I am trying not to overdo it.

What I was wondering is how do we go onto BLW? What do I give her how often and what portion sizes etc? I tried to give her carrot and potato mash a few days ago mixed with her nutramigen milk and vitalite and sheeither gagged or choked on the lumps or spat them out

I am new to all this teaching to eat 'big people' food and so any help/tips are so so welcome

xx

Hi there

Purists of BLW will tell you it's only BLW if you do finger foods from start, but...whatever
As your LO isn't 6mths yet I'd hold off on anything other than fruit or veg until then. As for how much, I highly recommend the BLW cookbook both for info on foods and inspiration for recipes we started LO on tiny bits of whatever we were eating (if suitable - and we tend to cook all from BLW cookbook now) and he only started actually swallowing things after 4wks or so.

You mentioned choking/gagging - be reassured that gagging is perfectly normal and helps teach them to move food around in their mouths choking is completely different and you'll know if LO is choking (blue and silent). Hasn't happened to our LO yet, whereas gagging is nearly every mealtime.

HTH

Yeah I understand blw if from start but easier to explain what I mean if that makes sense. Lol.

She will be 6 months next wk so we will be trying from then. She has been introduced to some meat dishes as per dietician. Is there a particular book which is best? Could I get from library you think?

Yeah lo gags then. Lol. What am I meant to do when she gags as I kinda freaked! Lol.

Thanksfor the reply hun

Xx

Gagging is scary at first, but sit on your hands if you need to - best to leave them to either spit it out or bring it forwards with their tongue. The gag reflex is much further forward in babies than us as adults, so they will gag long before it gets far enough back to cause choking. We are finding that we need to hook stuff out LO mouth when he won't spit it out but is getting upset cos he can't swallow it either - he isn't gagging at these points, just screaming!

As for a book, we swear by the BLW cookbook by gill rapley - might be available at library but worth spending £8 or so on as we use for recipes most days
Checkout the thread about what has your BLW LO eaten today for ideas
