Possibly starting solids in a few weeks, can I start Oatmeal first?

Dr. gave us the green light to start baby rice in a few weeks if DS seems ready. Tongue reflex is almost gone, sits very well supported with good neck control, very big appetite and seems as though he's becoming more and more interested in what we're eating. Just want him to be a touch steadier while sitting before we start.

Dr. wants us to wait until he's right around 6 months before trying purees. I'm okay with waiting to start purees, but I'm not as keen on giving him just rice. Would baby oatmeal be a better alternative or maybe try it after he figures out the rice or are there other suggestions to starting?

Any advice would help as solids confuse the bejezus out me

Porridge/oatmeal is much more nutritious than baby rice imo (and tastier too) but if you want to try rice go ahead and give both? My LO hated rice but by the time i gave it she had already had real flavours, by that i mean fruit/veg so when i tried mixing something with it she wasnt interested, but for a baby who doesnt know the difference there is no harm in trying if that is what you are going to do.

Our doctor said that we can start with oatmeal but it's more to learn how to eat from a spoon so we went straight to sweet potatoes on our 2nd introduction to food. We tried carrots a week before she was 4 months old and they were extremely constipating.

Thank you. We were going to wait a bit longer, but instead went ahead and started Thursday. I think I'm going to get some oatmeal too and start giving him both in a day and then we're trying to wait closer to 6 months for purees...but with how well he's done already, I have a feeling we're going to be starting those early than we think. I'll have to remember that about the carrots...ekk!

It could have been mostly b/c her tummy wasn't ready. On what would have been day 3 she was crying all day, didn't go until the sopository kicked in at 3pm. Then she refused to eat (nurse) until we were at the doctors until 6:30. She had last eaten about 11am and was also refusing to nap all day. I finally got her to nap at 1:30 and she pooed in her sleep. We ended up at urgent care and then sent to the E.R. in an ambulance.

Our son is 5 months old and his first meal was baby oatmeal, just like my older son!
