can you help me make a plan?

Hi ladies, i'd really appreciate a little help with this one

LO has been on "stage 1" weaning for about 4 weeks.

She has been having breakfast and tea along with 5 bottles (6oz milk).

I have been giving her purees up until now and have tried lots of different flavours, LO has loved all of them!

Now i would like to add more variety to her diet, such as fish and meat, also finger foods.

LO isn't too good with her hand + eye coordination (She will hold her beaker and open her mouth to drink it but she ends up shaking it about rather than drinking it )

So her normal routine is:

5:30am 6oz milk
7:30am Breakfast
8:30am 6oz milk
11:30am 6oz milk
2:30pm 4-6oz milk
4:30pm Tea
5:30pm 6oz Milk before bed

Shes obviously having plenty of milk and she eats about half a jar/pouch of baby food.
Should i cut her milk down a little bit?
Should i introduce soft finger foods like banana??

Feeling a little confused at the mo!

We've been doing BLW so would say offer away with finger foods now she's 6mths
As for cutting down milk, according to the guidelines, babies should drop feeds themselves when ready and it's best to offer milk before solids (say an hour or so) so they're not too hungry, or too full.
In my experience, banana has been the hardest thing for LO to handle due to its slipperiness and squash-ability! Rice cakes are a favourite with James, as is broccoli and raw pepper to suck on.

Enjoy!

So you would recommend milk before attempting a spoon feed? I have been trying a spoon feed about an hour before his bottle feed. I am so confused by all the different advice!

I usually offer food about an hour or so after he's last fed, if it works out that way. For breakfast, he eats around 8:30/9am and has either baby porridge or weetabix. Then has usually one feed around 11 or so, depending on his morning nap. For lunch he'll either have some of what I'm having (sandwich, cheese on toast) or leftovers from the night before and some fruit. He'll usually have 2 feeds in the afternoon. Then at supper time, he has either what we're eating mashed or blended up or if we're having something inappropriate for him, like pizza, I'll open up a jar that we keep stashed for such occasions or I'll give him some of the frozen foods I have in ice cube trays. Then he will sometimes have a bit of fruit after for dessert. He'll have another feed or two before bedtime. Then he feeds usually once or twice in the night, depending on when he wakes. Not every feed is a full feed though, sometimes it's just a snack on one breast and other times he'll take both.

It depends how long after the last feed an hour before the next one is? Iykwim?! At that age j was feeding every two hours still... Best thing is to follow your baby's cues tbh - if he seems hungry before solids I'd offer milk then solids. The rationale is they should be getting nearly all calories from milk still at that age especially. So you don't want them filled with solids with no room for milk.

If you're nervous could you try moving to stage 2 jars or stage 2 and stage 1 jar mixed. And once LO is used to the little lumps introduce finger food.
Or just dive straight in with lightly cooked veg, toast, raw sliced avacado, banana etc.
It's likely that she will gag but it's not the same as choking so don't panic and let her work it out for herself.

Hi,

With regards to when to give milk my friends health visitor told her to give milk then straight after give food as otherwise it seen as snacking and she was finding her child was waking hungry in the night...I know health visitors don't always know what they're talking about, but just thought I'd let you know what i had heard. I have been following this with my little boy. x
