Kayleigh is desperate for a job. She is very flexible, and can work fulltime in school holidays and part time during term time. When I was her age, we all worked in shops, but with the recession, all the part time hours are being snapped up by older people needing the money, leaving nothing for the teenagers.
Does anyone have any ideas that are not retail?? I'm stumped.
Fast food or food services,
Grocery store- cashier, or in the departments like deli, florist, etc...
At a recreation center (could be a receptionist, program leader),
Telemarketing (not sure how old you have to be),
Restaurant (here you have to be 18 to be a server if it has a liquor license, but can be a hostess, bus girl, or dishwasher earlier),
Is there a student employment center there? How far are you guys into summer holidays? There are often a lot of seasonal positions, here students are given preference for many- requiring student ID to apply/work there
She's tried all the local pubs, cafes and restaurants. Nothing. She's also done a stint telemarketing, but they didn't pay her and she hadn't got anything in writing! She's got cards up in the local shops offering herself as a babysitter too. She's going round the local fast food places today (we've got a McDonalds and a KFC within walking distance).
We're 3 weeks into the holidays here, and she is off until 4th September. Everywhere she's been has said they're not employing holiday workers this year due to the recession. There's a fruit farm a couple of miles away, and it has always employed teenagers to pick the fruit in the summer, but this year, they're keeping it in the family. Not a good time to find a job.
Wow I'm a bit surprised. But it sounds like she's been doing the legwork bless her :/
What about a farm or bakery? Office or somewhere a friend of the family works?
Depending on her age and minimum wage - she should have an advantage in getting holiday work.
Amanda, there's a couple in anstey. The greengrocers want someone P/T, weekends and afternoons. Also, there's a little coffee shop who are after someone p/t also
Hope this helps!!
Edit: Just remembered Valda (hairdressers) want a shampooist, maybe worth a try!
You star! Thanks lulu. She actually went into the job centre on Friday and printed off a couple that wanted CVs sending to head office. She sat down to do it yesterday and one listed the name of the place, and it's the shop in the middle of the Beaumont Leys shopping centre called Yours. So we popped straight up there and they were really impressed with her taking the initiative to take her CV in. The manager should hopefully call her today. We'll also take a quick run to Anstey later!
my first jobs tended to be cleaning jobs.
there are plenty of them out there.
& some pay quite well.
i'd start by looking in job centre, & local papers, then just ring all the local care homes, because they seem to always be wanting cleaners.
Also i know you said not in retail, but there are alot of places that do take on teens, more so.
Like coffee shops, cafe nero, coffee republic, etc & there is always mcdonalds, burger king, pizza hut (pizza hut you get tips at as well i think) you can apply for most of them on their websites.
i'd also say if there is a primark near you apply there !
& they offer very flexible shifts, and good way to build experience
