im taking my 10 keeping in touch days over the next 5 weeks to give me some extra xmas spending money. bit crafty i know especially as i only live 5 mins away from work and pop in there all the time so hardly need to "keep in touch" but its available to me and will break me in gently for my proper return in feb.

With kit days do you get paid your normal rate of pay? Or like an extra smp day?

The amount is dependent on what is agreed between you and your place of work but I personally would want my normal day's pay.

i did my kit days for this very reason!!

My work worked out the difference between my normal rate of pay and SMP, then made up the difference.

So for example -

say i earn £10 an hour. SMP works out at £2 (PURELY FOR EXAMPLE!) So, for each kit day, they paid me £8 an hour worked. so at the end of the month, i got a nice little lump sum of about £50 - £90 extra!! (i worked all 10 days, very beneficial however my mat leave was very short)

Be careful - they dont have to pay you anymore than your SMP rate! (which is about £17 a day)

I'm pretty sure I read that kit days are paid at your normal working rate. I'm sure I saw that on the direct gov website.

It's all dependent on the arrangement made between you and your employer but the statutory minimum they must pay is SMP.
