It always irritates me that the number to get a service or products is usually a freephone number, but when you call to complain about bad service or shoddy products, it's almost invariably an 0870 number so in order to complain about the bad things you end up giving them more money! Especially annoying when they then put you on hold!
Another idea is to look out for numbers companies quote to call should you be abroad. Often times they quote 0800 numbers for UK customers but 'normal' numbers if you are calling from abroad. The solution - use the 'foreign' number and knock off the extra numbers at the front.
