So, I never gave the statement 10 fingers and 10 toes much thought..that was until lately.

When family /friends find out about baby, the first question normally is if we know the gender. Upon answering no, the next thing they normally say is: Oh well, it does not matter as long as baby has "10 fingers and 10 toes" MIL even raised a glass to that.

For some reason, the thought popped up in my head: So what if my baby only has 9 toes. What then? Is that going to be a bad thing...

I just dont like that saying. I will love this baby no matter what and I really dont care if baby is a boy or girl, or whatever else!

Sorry pointless, but it just gets under my skin that people already try to "tell" what baby should be like.

Never thought of it that way either... like it would be a massive catastrophe if he/she was born with 1 digit missing! I know a girl who's baby was born with 11 fingers and they say it just makes her MORE special :) x

Just ignore it... Like u said, it's just a saying :) same as "as long as everything is in the right place". It's funny what annoys us while we are pregnant !!

Its just a saying, and it doesnt bother me! I kind of hope that my baby had ten fingers and ten toes is that bad? :) xx

I'm sure they're just hoping baby will be healthy that's all. It's just the same as saying "as long as baby has heart, lungs and stomach in the right place". They're just utilising an expression which means they wish you and baby well.

It doesn't bother me to be honest if people say that, I take it as a nice comment because it means they care that baby will be ok...

I think its a nice comment. I don't think they are specifically referring to the number of toes and fingers, its just a "all is well" comment.

10 fingers and 10 toes. i pray my LO has all of these! from the start of my pregnancy i have had a recurring dream that this isnt the case, and that there are TOO MANY digits :dohh: i dont know why im freaking out about it so much. at my 20 week scan i asked the sonographer is she could count them for me lol. she said no, they dont do such a thing. but she told me all the bones in the hands and feet looked normal and that a missing finger or toe would be linked with something else being wrong and everything was fine. so a slight relief! she got a picture of the bottom of LOs foot and ive tried to count the toes on it and even now i think there are too many lol. its a tad blurred! first thing im gona do when my babas born is count the digits! xx

I was on the phone to my Dad the other night (we live in different countries), id emailed our 20 week scan pic over to my sister, the one thats my avatar, and he said
"Our Lauren showed me that picture, its amazing isnt it?"

ME: "I know, hes going to be a little cutey isnt he"

Dad: "Well, lets hope so"

ME: "Of course he will be"

Dad: "Well he'll be loved anyway"

??????????????????????????

I got off the phone and thought, what does he mean by that? Is he worried in case we have an ugly baby? It really upset me! I cant get it out of my mind so im having it out with him when i see him tonight (he and his gf are coming out here for a holiday)!
Knowing my dad he'll probably say he cant remember saying it!! What a strange thing for a grandparent to say though!!
Thankyou for letting me rant!!
xxxx

haha yes in the scheme of things it doesnt matter :hugs:

although at my 12 week scan i admit i WAS delighted when the sonographer said ''baby has ten fingers and ten toes'' - and we could see them. Incredible really

:hugs:

I sure they didnt mean it literally. Its just a saying, meaning "as long as its healthy". And Im sure that they arent saying that they wont LOVE it, in sickness or with 9 toes. This ten fingers and toes comment followed a question about the gender, right? Its normal for your family to not really care about the gender "as long as the baby is healthy". I think that maybe some pregnancy hormones are getting the best of you. :) Nothing about that sounds mean to, if anything it sounds supportive.

Perhaps the comment just rather made me more sad than anything else. As it reminds me that there are people with disabilities and that kinda touched home with a new little life in the making. YEAH, Just ignore me. Being over sensitive now that I read my own post!

You all right...it is a well meant comment!

It is sad that some people WOULDNT feel the same about a baby thats not healthy. My 1 year old has heart problems. Hes not "perfect" by the definition, but it hurts me to think about anything without him. And there is absolutely NOOOO WAY that not being perfect would make me love him any less. :) Your baby is lucky to have such a loving mommy :)

It is just one of those funny sayings, where its the meaning rather than the exact wording

My OH was born with an extra digit on each hand which were removed when he was tiny. I've read online that it can be hereditary, so I'm prepared for the fact that my little girl could be born with extra digits and doesnt bother me at all. Nothing was said in the scan and I didnt ask. I havent said anything to my OH either as I dont want him to stress about it. We'll love her just the same x

Awwww, think your dad is just letting you know that he will love your baby unconditionally - i dont think you should pick him up on it. x
