DS has been in hospital very poorly recently and now I have to monitor his development - he is 11 weeks. Today I did the pull to sit test (pulling him from his back into a sitting position) and his head still lags back loads. He can hold it up fairly well in an upright position, although it does wobble around and bob forwards sometimes and bash my shoulder. He lifts his head during tummy time during not as much as the babies I see on Youtube! I'm so worried, has anyone else tried this test?

Hi there.

My LO is 10 weeks today and I have a similar concern. He wasn't pulling up his head at 8 week check but the doctor said if I was happy it was ok... I do the arm pull up with him most days and he still doesn't pull up his head. I tried it this morning, calling his name and being silly while I was doing it and, I think, he pulled his head up a bit more. The doctor seemed to think he's just a chilled out baby: he wouldn't 'stand' either at doctors but I know he can do that because he does it when he's hungry and I'm not moving as quickly as he'd like! My LO also seems to have better head control upright.

I'm going to speak to my HV but I'm guessing it's just a watch and wait thing. I'd be interested to see what anyone else has to say  xx

I'm sorry youve got the same worries. DS did "lose" 1-2 weeks in hospital where he was sedated and very poorly which I know must have set him back, but I still cant help but worry, especially as they told me specifically to watch his milestones. Google and youtube arent my friends either in this case!

I have also given into the google urge, but found it strangely reassuring! On the chat board I looked at, out of the 6 or 7 mummies who expressed worries about this, all but one came back again saying head control had improved dramatically in the following weeks. Hopefully this will be the case for us. Sounds like your little one needs to have those poorly weeks taken into account and, fingers crossed, you'll see an improvement. Some of the babies I read about were up to 15 weeks old, so it seems we might have a while before really worrying and that's without a hospital stay.

I remember your posts from third trimester. I'm usually a lurker, but just wanted to tell you how glad I am your little boy has made a full recovery. X

Thank you hun, and good luck to your LO too! X

Sedation makes them VERY floppy for ages. My DD was sedated for 3 weeks. She was wicked strong before hand and it took about a month for her to come right.

According to What to Expect the First Year, only a small percentage of babies can hold their head without a lag when being pulled from back to sitting at 3-4 months. It says, "at the beginning of the fourth month, most babies still cannot keep their head level with their body when they are pulled to a sitting position..." So, basically, that is extremely normal for an 8 week old. I wouldn't worry!
