12 weeks scan - absent nasal bone - anyone else experienced this?

Hi guys,

Had my 12 week scan today - everything looked great, my DS test result was 1:5100 or something, which apparently is low risk. However the doctor had to state the nasal bone as "absent". It was "there", as in we could see it but it was supposed to be "brighter" than the skin for it to show fully ossified (i.e. hardened) but it was same or a bit duller. She said not to worry too much, my risk was still low, the baby is still very small so hard to see and also my husband is of Asian origin so they often have smaller/less defined nasal bones.

I was fine when I left, but now I am having niggling worries about DS and googling everything :( Has anyone else experienced this and can give me some reassurance? They say they will check again at the 20 week scan, but it seems so long away. I'm such an impatient person, I don't want to get so freaked out I consider doing a private CVS/amnio or something silly when I don't need to....

Thanks for reading.

STEP AWAY FROM GOOGLE!!!!!!!!

No good will come from a google search, I assure you. If you're really worried ring your GP and see if they can get you in for another scan. Or even a private scan? I don't know how early then can do 3D but would that help?

Thanks Louppey - I know, Google is not my friend! I am at work and can't concentrate :( Hopefully I am worrying for nothing, the technician/doctor didn't seem too concerned, but stupidly I just wanted everything to be perfect. Well it pretty much was apart from this damn nasal bone not being brighter than the skin!

Of course you want everything to be perfect, that's completely normal. If the technician wasn't too concerned, then I would try not to be either. They would give you another scan if they were worried at all.

Are you finding out the gender? If you got a private gender scan they could always check the nasal bone for you then too?

Honestly hun, I know it's so easy to say, but just try not to let it bother you and remember all the good things from the scan. Your wriggly little baby being one of them :cloud9:

Google is no ones friend :haha:

Just wanted to say that you don't know it isn't perfect! Your baby could very likely be in perfect health! Seems like you were given some pretty logical reasons to believe that everything is okay. I would try to relax. With such a low risk, I wouldn't put myself and my baby thru any unnecessary testing. Try to trust your doctors. And definitely stay away from google. :hugs:

Thank you - I will, there were a lot of positive things so I will hold onto those. Good idea re: private scan, maybe I will think about that in between now and my 20 week scan.

Thanks tah - you are right, they did give logical reasons and didn't seem too concerned. Apparently there are very strict criteria for them to say the nasal bone is "present" and it was just a bit hard on the scan for her to tell the brightness. At least it is there I guess!

Try to relax hun, your LO will be perfect in your eyes irregardless :hugs:

Yes and I was 22, healthy and never had any kids. That means my risk for Down syndrome was exceptionally low. Our daughter though has Down syndrome.

We found out through a later amnio and also because she had heart defects that showed in later u/s's.

Diagnosis of Down syndrome is really scary! BUT I can't tell you what an amazing and fantastic blessing and bundle of happy joy she is! It's a scary new world IF you do happen to have a baby with DS. I won't begrudge anyone that grieving process of losing the image of a healthier perfect baby, but when you see and hold and get to know your child day by day, everyone with a DS baby I know says this too: you didn't realize you wanted a baby with Down syndrome until you had one!

Be still and know all will be well regardless. Many people are seeking desperately to even adopt babies with Down syndrome! They're popular kids :)
