My 14 month old hasn't really said any words yet. She hasn't even said mama yet. Shell ocassionally sounds like she says hi or mamama lol I'm getting worried. Should she not be saying something by now? When did your lo start learning words?

I wouldnt be worried at all :) 14 months is still so young. I think all phoebe said at that age was dada and dog, and now 3 months on she has lots of words and sometimes strings two together xx

No I wouldn't worry, 14 months is still early for talking. Look more at her understanding at this age. Is her understanding generally getting better, can she follow simple instructions etc.

Ds didn't say anything resembling mama till about 19/20 months. He had daddy, nanny, grandad all before mama. Sure they do it to annoy us.

Mine can say 'Mama', 'Dada', 'More' and 'No'. The rest is babble I can't understand. They don't say much at this age :)

14 months is really young to worry about talking. DD1 was 22 months before she started saying anything resembling a word and then her speech exploded now at three she has an amazing vocabulary and speaks even clearer than most kids her age. I was never too incredibly worried because her understanding of what people said to her was amazing, I used to just tell myself that if she got to 2 and still said nothing then I would worry.

They're all so different.

My DD had about 70 words at 14 months but she's slower in other areas (like climbing! She still can't climb onto out bed etc at almost 20 months)

We saw a speech therapist for one of our boys after he had no words at 22 months and from her we know that they look for 5 words by the age of 18 months, not including mama or dada. My other twin had about 5 words at 17 months. 14 month is very young to be talking.

The more important thing to look out for at this age is, is she trying to communicate in other ways? Using signs maybe? Is she babbling?

I dragged my kid to a speech/ language pathologist at 14 months... she had around 5 words, but I was more concerned that she wasn't babbling enough. I didn't know what "normal" babbling was supposed to sound like in terms of range and frequency. I think they thought I was nuts. Well at 18 months, she had 50 words, around 2, she was talking in sentences, and now at 30 months she's talking in paragraphs and won't shut up.

Your LO will most probably be absolutely fine, they develop so differently. But you're right to be on the look out just in case.

14 months is far too young to be worried about speech. My eldest was around 18 months when he said his first words and by 2 was saying anything and everything.
My youngest actually said her first very clear, in context word at 16 months and has gone on to have a severe speech delay.

Even if you took her to see a speech therapist they wouldn't be able to do anything because they really have to have a certain level of understanding to work with them.

I'd try to stop worry about milestones and enjoy your lo because once she's grown up you won't want to regret not just being with her.

I agree what with others have said its still so young to be talking, my first daughter was very quick with her speech and had a lot of words by 18 months but my second daughter is 15 months now and really only says mamma and she still isnt walking yet! All babies are different, try not to worry!

If I remember correctly, Violet started just short of a year and had 3 words by a year: up, daddy, and kitty-cat. "Mama" didn't come until later. At 14 months, I wouldn't worry. The average is one word by a year. That means that some have more at a year and some take longer to get that first word.

Ella is a month younger but she hasn't said any words yet. I'm not worried. She'll get there :)

My LO is almost 15 months and I can probably list a dozen words but we don't hear them regularly. Ie she asked for her water once and hasn't said it since. But she's started some proper chat this last week or so. Ie she was having a pretend phone chat the other day and when I asked who she was talking to it was grandad (first time she's said grandad) and the other morning when she wanted me to get up she was pulling on my pillow saying 'mummy mummy, out' out was a new word.

Mine is 15 months and only says Dada sometimes. He chatters in his own language a good bit. The ped isn't worried yet. We had his ears checked and they were fine. He's a first born, doesn't go to day care and is a boy so no worries yet!
