My little guy out of nowhere started standing up on the coffee table, chairs etc - all of a sudden! Do I have to remove all of chairs etc? He gets a HUGE smile on his face when he's standing up on the furniture.

What should I do? I don't want him to fall and hurt himself. Thank you

It's a part of normal development :), kids love doing that sorta stuff. Both of mine still climb and stand on everything.

He'll learn to balance. Maybe just stay close? Falling is a paet of learning limits.

Thank you :) glad it is normal! While I am in the same area I am not right by him every second...gotta get some domestic things done lol! I could see him really hurting himself if he fell off the couch or coffee table :(

My dd2 is the same. I just leave her to it, and make sure there is nothing thay she could hurt herself on if she fell.

Couches and coffee tables are pretty low, I honestly wouldn't worry about that at all. Sophie was climbing up on the couch at 8-9 months and falling off too. She climbed onto the dining table at 11 months and promptly walked off the side! Was quite scary but kids seems to bounce rather than break. Sophie was whacked in the head by a car while we were walking last November and you would think she would have been pretty hurt but all she had was a miniscule scab on her head.

My lo has been a climber since she started walking. I take her down off things she could get hurt climbing or standing. Like, if she stands up on the couch I tell her we sit on couches and have her sit down. I take her off my kitchen table 100 times a day. Some of the things she stands on are okay as she wouldn't fall too far. Like she had the rollin zebra ride on and she stands on the seat and I just watch her. I get what you mean though not being able to watch all the time. I was paying bills the other night and dd was in her playroom, but when I finished the bills I went to check on her and she was sitting in my kitchen sink.

Priceless! Thank you!

My DS is 17 months too and is climbing and standing on everything. He actually just fell off the couch yesterday. He suddenly decided to try and jump over a bunch of pillows and ended up sliding off with the pillows so it was luckily a slow fall but still cut his lip on his tooth from the fall. I just barely missed catching him. He's been getting on and off the couch on his own for a while now so I'm a little more comfortable with that because he always does it the right way. He has also just started climbing on the dining room chairs which lead to him trying to climb on to the table. That one makes me nervous because he could easily slip off those and the tile floor is obviously much harder then the rug by the couch. I do try to give him some time on the chairs and try to encourage sitting or being on his knees so he can see whatever it is that's so interesting and stay right with him. Once he's had his chance to be up there for a little while he won't be happy about me making him get down but when I say no he typically won't climb back up. I did also notice he's always trying to stand on his little plastic chair and actually tipped over in that today. He just looked at me and said uh oh and went back to it. :dohh: It's all a work in progress I guess.

I try so hard to have no reaction when I turn my back for a few seconds and there is he standing up on a chair! But yes same thing, I gently take him down and he goes right back to it. He fell off the coffee table the other day (from a sitting position) and was bleeding a bit from the mouth - sooo scary!

Yes having no reaction to I feel like almost everything he does has been an adjustment. I have two older girls and they were definitely much less active and reactive than my son. They've also learned to not have any reaction to things he does because any reaction good, bad, scared or whatever seems to lead to the same thing.. He'll do it again! Unless he seems like he actually may have hurt himself (which is surprisingly rare) we try to ignore him cuz as soon as something happens he immediately looks around at anyone who's near him.

Mine climbs on everything, and recently has started throwing himself from one piece of furniture to the next. Only if they're really close, though, like from the recliner that's right next to my bed. Killed me the first time I saw him with his feet in the chair and his upper body on the bed.

If he can't climb down on his own, he just stands there and fusses until I rescue him.

Omg thank you so much for this thread! My son climbs on EVERYTHING! I thought we were the only ones, all his friends don't seem to do this and the mothers look at us like I have two heads and he's horns on his!! He's so full of adventure and excitement. Glad to know it's normal

This pic is awesome:haha: So looks like stuff my boys do! LOL

OP, its pretty normal for this age. You just have to keep a straight face, try not to look too alarmed by it, as you don't want them learning to be afraid of everything either. If they fall, try to keep calm about it so they don't make as much a fuss about it. One thing that helps is if you can teach him to pile up pillows or blankets on the floor to fall on, or jump on, its not so stressful then. My boys do this ALL the time. They love to jump off the couch, so I taught them to pile up pillows so they don't land so hard and hurt themselves.
