is this alot? does it mean labour soon??? i no everyone is different.... was also told baby is measuring small AGAIN

I've also been told my baby is 2/5 engaged.

I assume it means baby is on its way to being engaged, but only 2 5ths of the way there. From what I've heard baby can be fully engaged for weeks before labour or may only become fully enaged an hour or so before hand so unfortunatley I don't think you can predict how long it's likely to be before labour begins x

2/5 engaged means that 2 fifths of the baby's head has gone down into your pelvis, and the midwife could still feel 3 fifths. it's a good thing, but i'm afraid i don't think it means anything in terms of when you will go into labour. if it's your first baby it's normal for this to happen several weeks before labour.

i'm a bit jealous, actually - i'm 37 weeks and my baby is nowhere near engaging, as i have a lot of extra fluid. if he doesn't engage i might have to be induced early, due to a risk of cord prolapse :(

thanks ladies... sorry to hear that shambaby, hopefully baby will engage soon.. this is my first so im not familiar with all the goings on :) but i was told last week that my cervix was shortened and opening, and my doc told me today the head was 2/5 engaged so im wondering should i have my bag ready :)

My LO is still free as a bird in there too (am a day behind you). Have been bouncing on my ball and rotating my pelvis alot to try and encourage her to drop but no luck luck so far. DS was 3/5 engaged at this point but I know it's quite common for #2+ not to engage until labour

thanks, but apparently it's unlikely he will engage with all that fluid in there - he's just floating in it! i've been on the ball, too, and walking up and down the stairs sideways, but not helping one bit. :(

irish baby, you should definitely have your bag ready, but also be prepared that you could still be in for a long wait! shortening and opening cervix sounds promising, though. just noticed on your ticker you're still a little early, though, so hope your little one stays in there a couple more weeks at least x

aw ladies can u help me save posting a thread since about 28 weeks the midwife has put in my notes- free so that obvously means head down but still free last appointment she put on the brim  but it was a different midwife does these mean the same thing??? Thanx x

i think on the brim means it's not engaged yet, but it's just hovering at the top of your pelvis.

rachel - baby is starting to make its way down :)

shambaby - what can they do for you about the extra fluid?? induce you early?? whats cord prolapse?? is this your first baby aswell??? i have been told im measuring small and that i will be having a small baby, was given steriod injections last week to mature baby's lungs incase i go early.... and today they said head was engaged, hope my baby stays in another few weeks at least...xx

i'm the same, she can feel 3/5ths but once she can only feel 2/5ths then you are officially engaged which is what i read in my NHS pregnancy book.

It means your babys head is 3/5 (60%) down in your pelvis and only 2/5 (40%) is above the brim. It is unlikely the babys head will un-engage now so yes its a good thing :) xx

Did she write pal beside it as that means palable, which means feel.

I have been 3/5ths engaged for weeks now! And hasn't meant anything for me!! Just means we have well behaved babies that are going down the right way!! x

Page 12 of your pregnancy notes explains it all quite well. Hope this helps x

My friend told me that when she was 2/5s engaged the midwife said that was all she had left to engage before he was fully ready, that it means 3/5s were already into the pelvis area - but I really dont have a clue myself, just going by what she said x

my notes say - relationship of presenting part to brim 2/5.............. so is the head 2/5 down my pelvis????

This link shows baby's head fully engaged...... above -5 is "free" then if the midwife has written "2/5ths engaged" - that means the top of baby's head is on -3
BUT
if the midwife has written "2/5ths palpable" that means the baby is on -2 (lower in the pelvis) and the midwife can only feel 2/5ths of baby's head.

Sorry if this doesn't make sense!! :dohh: xxxx

thanx crazy :) :) my notes say - relationship of presenting part to brim 2/5, do you think that means engages or palpable??? its all so confusing :) :) xx

lol unfortunatly it dosnt mean labour is close... it means 2/5ths of the babys head can be felt in the pelvis... so he/she is getting into position and they will stay there (usually anyways if this is your 1st)... over the next few weeks the head will move lower and lower until all the head can be felt in the pelvis... my babys almost fully there and i can tell you its bloody uncomfy lol i have 4weeks of this until hes duex
