20 week Gender scan with NHS

While I know the 20 week scan isn't primarily for the gender scan, I was wondering that if they can't tell you due to baby not co-operating or whatever reason, do they offer you another one a week or so later? Or will I have to wait until we book our 4D scan some months later?


While my main concern is that baby is ok and growing properly, I'd really hate to have to wait another month or two to know the sex

No they wont give u another appointment just for gender... only if the baby isnt cooperating and they need to get additional measurements (ie spine kidneys etc) will they gove u another scan... baby wasnt cooperating and i had to go back the next day and then she double confirmed our girls gender

No they won't. But if you really want to know. Always can book a private scan. Our baby was being difficult at our anatomy scan 19 weeks.. Both tech and dr said they THOUGHT girl but would confirm when I came back for more heart pictures. So we went back 2 weeks later and another tech said girl.

Baby is very much a wriggler so I'm hoping he or she will co operate. It's £80 for gender scans where I am, but we already plan on booking a 4D scan some time in april or may which is something like £170

At our 12 week scan baby was sat up and wouldn't lay down haha!so the lady couldn't check for everything

My baby refused to co-operate at all. I went for the 20week scan on tuesday and the baby wouldn't lay the way that was needed so I had to stay there for 2 hours, was seen 3 individual times and when they tried to tell me the gender, they couldn't be sure. However they both said that they hadn't seen any boy bits and you'd think with seeing the baby 3 times, you'd have seen them at least once. But they couldn't be sure, I was upset and my fiancé and I have booked a private gender scan for 3 weeks time. I'm thinking a girl at this point but as long as it's okay, I'm happy. Plus I got really shite pictures so I was disappointed there too and because I'm not "skinny" I left my ultrasound with a sore tummy because the tech seemed to love putting pressure on my stomach. If they can't tell, I'd get the private scan but hopefully your scan will be better than mine.

Hopefully, I know that OH doesn't agree with paying for a private gender scan, so I have no idea what's gonna happen if we don't find out on the day

Same, we really can't afford a gender scan so hopefully we'll find out on the 5th!
I wonder if I could argue that surely the baby's bits are part of it's anatomy!

Just one thing, my scanner lady said its best not to leave it too late to have 3d scan as baby is too squashed up and you can't always get good pics. We went for a gender scan at 18 weeks but nota 3d one. Got told boy and have been told boy twice since then. Baby behaved on all his scans!

If my baby behaves he or she can have as many sweeties they want on their first birthday lol. If not, I'm not afraid to introduce the naughty step early.


Our baby is due in August 2nd so hopefully April/may will be a good time to have our 4d scan

No they wont bcos 20 wk scan isnt a gender scan its to detect any abnormalities.
lots hosp wont tell u. my hosp last time altho we didnt wanna know she couldnt tell us anyway even if we did.
my hosp now doesnt tell u regardless so im going for private scan

Ah luckily my letter says that they will look for the gender if we wish them to as long as we understand that it isn't always possible to detect it.

Afraid not.

The 20 wee scan is a anomaly scan, sexing is only a bonus some hospitals offer.

I'm sure they'll be able to see, I heard some ppl say they get funny about telling you but ours didn't, she was lovely. So exciting finding out all ok with baby and what you're having. Then you can get shopping lol!!

when is you 20 week scan hun? we got a 100% sure the day after we had it cause we had to go back but i wanted to deffo know and 1 week later we paid for the private scan... is out my mind at ease. Jst to make sure. Weve booked for a 4d too 16 march well be 27+5.. When r u thinking of booking 4d?
