Just been to get LO weighed and whilst i was there i mentioned to health visitor that LO is off his feeds, he normally takes five 6 ounce bottles a day, roughly at 7:30, 10:30, 1:30, 4:30 and 7:15pm he sleeps through at night. But the last few days he has been very fussy..... Monday he took 22 ounces, tue he took 18 ounces, wed he took 13 ounces and today so far he has taken 15 ounces. He was sick after feeds since tue and it is quite phlemy.... Dr has checked him out and he seems fine, apparantly. He is still having wet nappies and seems alert but grumpy. But i was worried about the reduction in feeding.

Well HV said 30 ounces a day was a lot. LO weighed 17.6 today and he is 4 months.... But he was 10.7 at birth. LO has dropped below his line he followed till about 12 weeks but is now following the lower line perfectly. HV said he was above average for his weight.

She did not tell me how much milk he should be taking but now i am led to believe 30 ounces is too much. Even though according to the formula tub that says at 4 months he could have five 7 ounce bottles (and he weighs more than the average 4 month old). I don't know how much he should have and can't help thinking the HV may be wrong.

Of course we will give LO all the milk he wants but again HV gave me no indication of how long it was ok for him to be taking such reduced feeds as he is currently taking.

We took Isla to be weighed today & she was 17lb 10 but she was only born 7lb 5! She's now on the 91st percentile & was born on the 50th.

She usually has 5x 7oz bottles but there's normally an ounce or so left in the bottom although sometimes she does finish it.

The HV wants us to keep a food diary & go back in 4 weeks, she said the amounts we were feeding were ok however not to try & get her to finish / eat more if she looks like she's done.

Sometimes I would try & encourage her to eat a little more if she only had 4-5 oz or I'd try the bottle again half an hour later to see if she wanted the rest.

She's not thrown up anything I gave her so I don't think I've been over feeding her but the HV said to stop 'encouraging' her lol. Also she is long & any clothes with legs in we have to buy 6-9 months so the HV said its probably that too. Dad is 6'2".

Anyway I'm sure 30 oz is fine, & your LO's weight is fine too, especially if he was born over 10lb!

:hugs:
xx

This is the same amount as my little girl takes too, and at exactly the same times you mention too. She was 13lb 9oz when weighed last week and was 6lb 12oz at birth. I don't feel like its alot, the tin (nutramigen) says at four to six months she shold be taking four 7oz bottles a day but 7oz is still a bit much for her, she always either leaves the last ounce or pukes it up. And there is TROUBLE if she's not fed at those times!!

Could your little one be teething? My friend's baby who is teething has gone right off her milk. Hope he's ok soon x

Thank you, and yes i think he may be teething x x

Ignore the health visitors and packaging guidelines. They both panic you unneccesarily. There's a rough guide for amount to be drunk and thats 2 to 2.5 oz per pound. So if your lo is 17lb then 5 6oz bottles is bang on (its oz drunk not as made up so a 6oz bottle is about 7oz when made up).

But some babies eat more, some less. My Dd never went above 5 7oz bottles ever, and more often had 5 6oz in a day before weaning. Ds on the other hand sinks 5 8oz bottles now and is only 16lb.

^^^WSS Its just a guideline. The one to listen to most is your baby. As long as they are happy and healthy carry on as you have been.

My lo is 13 weeks Sunday and takes about 25 oz a day she weighs 12lb (born @35 weeks weighing 5lbs 1oz). No one ever told me this was too much. I think your lo is just fine, sounds perfect to me.

My LO was born 8'15oz so was a bigger baby too.. he's now 22 weeks and 19'1oz. He roughly has anywhere between 25-35oz a day, he seems happy with the amount he's drinking and i'll always feed him on demand. My HV said the way they make formula now, you can't really over feed them, if he wants the milk, he's obviously hungry. take into consideration what your HV is saying, but if you think he's just hungry, and his weight isn't over what it should be for his age, & birth weight, then i wouldn't worry x

Our little man will be 11 weeks old tomorrow and he has just started having 8oz bottles. We are getting him weighed tomorrow so I don't know how much he currently weighs, our HV didn't mention anything about it being too much, if they didn't want what you were offering then they would either leave some or sick it back up. Tyler was 9lbs 10.5oz at birth and last time we got him weighed, he was 13lbs exactly. We feed when Tyler wants it, you know best as their Mummy

Your HV is soooooooooooo wrong???? did she know how old your LO was? did she know she;s not eating food yet. My Lo used to take 1000ml - no sure in ounces what that is -oh like 33 I think and that';s the norm I thinl according to the packaging give or take. 30 ounces is fine
