Swelling is normal. I've had it as well.
However, what you should watch for is rising blood pressure. Pre-eclampsia also seems to hit towards the end of pregnancy and swelling is a sign. What I would do is call your doctor or MW and discuss (that's what I do every time I have swelling).

Be sure to drink lots of water and lay with your feet higher than your heart. That will help.

Just something to think about... Hows your salt intake? If you are eating to many salty foods it could cause you to retain water!

I've recently had this too. I phoned MW when it first happened and she said as long as I wasn't having severe headaches or my BP wasn't a concern then all was probably ok.

I had a dr appt yday so my urine got checked for protein and was clear.

If the swelling goes down after elevation and some rotation of the ankles then I don't think you should worry. In my mind I would phone if any swelling is still present after a night's sleep.

Swelling is totally normal, but it can also be a sign of preeclampsia, but usually only if your face or hand get swollen as well... if it's JUST your feet, most likely you just need to put your feet up when you can... my massage therapist recommended a cool foot soak with Epsom salt in the water- it helps draw out the toxins and extra fluid. The 1-2 times I've had swelling, this helped a lot- then I put on lotion after as it can dry out your feet.

This site might help explain better:

Best of luck :)

Hi,
I'll be 32 weeks tomorrow and I've started having swollen ankles in the last week or so too. When I get home from work and put feet up the swelling usually goes down, but it soon returns in the morning when I start walking around again. I've heard it's a sign of pre-eclampsia so I've called midwife and am waiting for her to return my call.

hey hun,
I have been suffering from swollen ankles or 'Cankles' i like to call them :haha:
Mine is due to being on my feet at work all day, (i work in retail) On my lunch break i sit down with my feet up & i try and take a couple of 10 min breaks just to sit down. When i get home i put my feet straight up again & usually in the morning they go down but then it happens again the next day! LOL. I told my MW about this as its a sign of pre-eclampsia but my BP has been fine & no probs with urine.
Hope ur ok xx
