Hi I was told at yesterday appt that my fluid was very very low and that unless it had dramatically increased by next thus they would be delivering him by c section. I've had steroid inj to help his lungs.

What will happen? Will they rush him off? Will I be able to see him as ill be recovering from spinal? Are they generally mentally ok? Should he be able to breath on own? Gosh i have a million and one questions so really I'm after any advice from you ladies.

Currently my head is spinning!!!! I was hoping to make 37 weeks but now this won't be happening :(

I also feel like I haven't done my job properly of keeping him in me :(

Also I take my get off to you ladies with preemies it's such a frightening time and I wish u all the very best of luck. I know he isn't super early but I hope you don't mind me posting!

Apart from trouble BF Niamh was just like a term baby, she was able to breath on her own, feed from a bottle, regulate her temp she just took a few weeks longer to do things.

Thanks Lozzy that's really encouraging!!! She looks gorgeous in the pics!

My babies were born at the following gestations, 39+4, 38+3, 31+3 and last one 34. The last one at 34 was because my waters were leaking lots (broke whilst abroad on holiday :-( ) and I had frequent scans to check fluid which was just enough to stop them getting him but not enough to wait either. They were going to induce me at 36weeks but I went into natural labour at 33+6 during the night and hour and a half after arriving at the hospital he was born lol. Only issue he had was that he was tired and wouldnt stay awake to be breastfed. He was home 7 days after he was born :) It is possible to replenish some of your amniotic fluid by drinking lots and lots of water.:hugs:

@ 35 weeks they can breath on their own and should be able to feed, so i would not worry to much

Thanks honeybear! I'm drinking loads if water & on bed rest hoping it will be better next week! Gosh your lo's where all impatient to meet you!

Thanks for your help! :)

Evelyn was born at 35 weeks exactly :) she was just like a term baby but as said above she was extra sleepy and had to have top up feeds as struggled to BF properly, but by the time we were discharged (6 days later) she was getting there. Every 35 weeker is different so just take each day as it comes.

Evelyn is thriving and is now 8 weeks old (3 weeks adjusted but I hate adjusting her age !!!) xxx

My son, Elliot, was born at 35 + 1 (emcs due to placental abruption)and is now a big strong healthy 5 year old, one of the tallest in the class and in top sets for all subjects!
He was in special care for 4 days but was able to breast feed right from the start, breathe without help and regulate his own temperature.
His milestones were reached between gestational/corrected ages and he is now the same as any other boy his age!
My 34 + 2 weeker (emcs due to pprom/infection) was in nicu 5 weeks due to contracting an infection and reached his first year milestones later than corrected age and is still one of the smaller children in his class despite being one of the oldest but developmentally is now on track with his peers!

Like pp said, every 35 weeker is different but you have got to a good gestation.
Wish you all the best with your baby!

At that gestation, especially with steroids- baby should be able to breath on their own :) Odds are they will let you peek at LO before they take him to check him over.

I can only speak from my personal experience on the BF front, but don't be surprised if he gets tired easily from BF initially. My guy is now 38 weeks gestational age, and still gets exhausted by BF'ing (that or he's totally faked me out and just lazy lol). I'd just say maybe try to have a breastpump ready on hand JUST in case he doesnt come out rearing to go on the nursing front- so you can start expressing and top him off if need be.

Best of luck to you hun! It's a scary time and I hope things go smoothly for you both! Keep us updated on how things go! and of course you can ask questions here, doesnt matter what gestation, potential of going into the NICU is scary stuff!

my girl was a 34 (almost 35) weeker and she DID have trouble breathing, she took her first breath and then they took over 10 minutes ventilating her as she stopped breathing completely. but it only took a day and a half and she was breathing on her own and after two weeks we were allowed out with some feeding issues still :)

Hi all thankyou so much for your responses Harrison was born on 10/3/13 t what we thought was 36+5 but turns out that they now think scans where wrong and he was somewhere between 34/35 weeks. He was struggling to breathe so had to have oxygen for a few days, he was unable to tolerate any feed even through the ng tube and was extreemly swollen due to excess fluid - bless him he looked poorly. However today is his 4th day and he is breathing air! Almost taking what he needs through the ng tube and have started putting him to the breast (hmmm he is struggling and sleepy so I think we may have to opt for bottles....) he is also under lights today for his jaundice.

I have to say it was a terrifying experience and my emotions are still all over the place. He is the most beautiful baby and I love him to death but I'm really struggling with being on the ward without him. I'm expressing every 3 hrs too even through the night so I'm exhausted but its all worth it!!

Again thankyou for all your support x

Congratulations on the birth of Harrison!
Sorry you've had some problems but so glad to hear Harrison is breathing without oxygen now! What was his birth weight?
My son, Alexander, came home on bottles of expressed milk too. It can feel disappointing at first when you planned to breastfeed but as long as baby is healthy and well and growing, you're doing the best you can by him. We managed to switch to bf once home - it wasn't easy at first but we did it.
How are you feeling?

Firstly congrats on the birth of your beautiful bundle :) Feeding at the breast will be tiring for him at the moment, if the indications are that he was 34/35 wks then he will get tired. I had that with my youngest. Persevere trying him at the breast as at some point it will just click. As you are already working so hard to give him the best by expressing 3 hourly you can definitely end up exclusively bf. If you do feel giving some bottles of expressed milk will get you out of the hospital quicker do that plus try him at the breast every feed. Then you can ditch the bottles once you are home :hugs:

Thanks hun!! You where right it just clicked :) he is now bf and having the odd bottle - we are home yay!!!!!!!!

Superdy duper. Well done you. You could drop the bottles completely if you wanted or use them for you to have a rest or pop out for hour alone. :hugs:

Congrats hun! Your story is similar to mine-confusion regards gestational age etc, i just wanted to say persevere with breast feeding if its what you want & dont stress over the bottles. My son and i naturally evolved to exclusive breastfeeding on demand as he got the jaundice under control and was stronger. I also pumped every 2 hours and it was horrd!
Good luck and enjoy your little baby! They grow too fast!!!

Thank you very much everyone. I'm managing to breast feed and then top up with a bottle twice a day only 1oz but it gives me a bit of a rest and its a bit easier for him :)

Hope you are all well? How are your lo's getting on?
