What do you think of them? Would you have one/have you had one? How much do they cost? Was just chatting to the OH and it seems that when it comes to it he would like one. So I thought I would get some opinions :)

For me personally I'm not keen, for one thing they are usually £100-£150 and I'd rather buy something for the baby, but secondly for me the most exciting thing about the baby being born is seeing what they look like for the first time. We had a gender scan (which was admittedly £70 lol) but we still had the surprise of what he looked like you know? Plus tbh they kind of freak me out lol. Having said that, I would love to see a pic of me in the womb it's pretty overwhelming so could be a lovely keepsake for you all. I don't know, we probably won't, especially as we will probably have another 2D gender scan lol.

We had a 4d scan with my daughter and it was absolutely incredible! For us it wa £100 and well worh the money imo. We got loads of pics and i got to see my little girl smile! We also got a dvd that i still watch from time to time. I am definitely going to get another one next time too :) x

I agree with MarineWAG - they freak me out a bit, too. And I'd rather spend the money on something else.

i had one with my first but i wont be having one with the next few. I dont even plan on finding the sex (but we'll see if i still feel the same when i'm pregnant!". I enjoyed doing it with our first. I thought of it like this: if it's your first you have no idea what your baby might look like.. then you see it on your 3d scan and it's just amazing! you can spot the similarities! Also when your baby is born it's amazing how much their faces look like the 3d sonogram. Mine was free because i was in a pregnancy study. I wont be doing it again but i say if you think you might want one, get it!

We had ours done because my DH work covered it. My dd was so shy we basically got tons of hands in the air. Lmao. It was free so we'll do it again with #2 because....well...why not, it's free haha. I do have to say we did get a couple face shots and it was super neat to compare once she was born and see it really does look like her. For me..I just think it would be cool to looks back and see yourself in 3d once your older!! I think that would have been cool to see.

I wouldn't have one, but I am someone who plans to only have one ultrasound for gender if it's a low risk pregnancy. I am concerned with the side effects of ultrasounds on the foetus (and me).

I agree with angiepie. As long as my pregnancy is low risk, I'll only be having one ultrasound, and it won't be a 3D/4D one. I worry about the side effects to the baby as well . . and we won't be finding out the gender of any future babes we have :)

I don't think we'll have one, a friend of mine had a 3d scan and I thought her baby looked like an alien rather than the aww factor.. lol

Can someone tell me what is meant by 'side effects' i have never heard this before :o
(asking genuinely not being a nit picker lol) x

I have all ready told OH i want a 4d scan lol, :haha: getting ahead of myself a wee bit ! x

Edit; I did a google, and me being naive had just assumed that ultrasounds were 100 % safe i had never even questioned it, so i am quite surprised at what a quick google search is telling me.
However it is quite clear that all the apparent problems ultrasounds have are mostly ideas and not solid fact. It is interesting though!

We had a 4D scan with DD and its definitely something I'd want to do again, if its done at the right time of pregnancy then it's amazing!

I've seen some 4D scans that were done way to early and the baby did look a bit alien and skeletal. I was amazed at how much my DD actually looked from the scan photos, I'd definitely recommend them

I think they are a nice option but, for me personally, I think they make the babies look a bit alien like and am not keen. I also like the idea of not knowing what the baby looks like before it is born. We won't be finding out the gender either and would rather put the money towards something else for the baby

I have to say Elliot did look like an alien when he was born haha, I have spooky photos of him looking really grey and slippery wet with almost black eyes in a really dark room a few minutes after he had been born in the pool lol. He got his colour quickly though, and a bonus no blood or yucky stuff ha.

Here are 3 pretty good articles on the side effects :)

I just wanted to add something to this discussion..CMarie thank you for posting those..i think people shoulld have every oppinion before they decide to do anything with their child...but to woman who want/arent sure....just remember...there is going to be a study for whatever you want to find out there. Certain sites are very extreme in their parenting beliefs....even one of those links talks about the dangers of fetal monitors...so if you are someone who believe in absolutely NO interference and you dont' believe in u/s period...then yes...the thought of a 3D one is absurd...

Before I got mine done I was very hesitant and did my own reseach on the good and bad of it...and the studies I found talked about prolonged exposure...we're talking EVERY day.....their subjects were people who OWNED these products in their freakin' homes!!! So....I just want to conclude by saying..as with ANYTHING else...everything in moderation is ALWAYS the key in my personal oppinion...I spoke with my dr and she confirmed 3D was completely safe...my daughter is completely healthy and had not a single issue........so just some food for thought....I think people posting links can be useful...but we REALLY REALLY have to be careful about what we find on the internet...depending on who the backer is...it can create serious fear-mongering when unecessary!!!

Just to prove what I mean...here are links for the other side...and all i did was google "are 3d u/s safe?"...I didn't google to sway it one way or the other

No we won't have one, I'm not for or against, we just don't have loads of spare money so would rather put the money to something else. We didn't have one with DS either so would feel a bit bad doing it for one and not the other. My sister had one with her first and it was good but not something I'm bothered about.

OH is totally against any ultrasound because there are studies out there suggesting it could have effects, but ultrasounds have been done for years if it was a major problem they wouldn't be done, right?

Thank you for the insight Chulie! I've always known I wanted an ultrasound, but I'm going with the old school view than the 3d/4d view. I'll see how cute baby is when they're eventually here :)

I had two with my daughter, one at 16 weeks to find out her gender, and one at 30 weeks to see what she looked like! I was way too impatient but it was amazing seeing what she looked like in the womb. If we can afford it we will be doing it again to :) She did look slightly skeletal at 16 weeks but that didn't freak us out because she was our little skeletal baby :) x

We had one strictly because our ultrasound tech at our 20 week scan didn't sound incredibly confident when telling us our LO was a girl...so I had this constant nagging thought that maybe she was a boy. My OH decided to get me the 3D scan for Christmas. I think it was around $120CAD.

Nice idea and I was sooo excited to see her (and we got gender confirmation) but I won't be doing it again. Her face was smushed against the placenta so we didn't get a good look at her and the pictures were terrible. I know that won't necessarily be the case next time but just not worth the $ to find out, in my opinion!

My scans were free thanks to Medicaid. I had one done and loved seeing lil man. In one of the pictures he was smiling.
