So we're flying to Egypt a week friday. We fly at 1pm and its 5.5 hrs.

So a few questions.....HOW THE HELL WILL WE COPE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! he he :winkwink:

Firstly....Miller is not the type of baby that will just sit and play on your knee....he has to be on the floor...crawling around doing his own thing......or else....he SCREAMS blue murder !!!!......so .....how do we entertain him for 5 hrs on a plane??

Secondly.....he usually sleeps at 130 and around 330.....do i try and keep him awake in the morning so he'll be more likely to sleep in the afternoon??...PS.....I usually have to put him in the car to get him to sleep....he WILL NOT....just fall asllep on me!!

Thirdly.....anyone tried Infant Piriton for knocking him out??.....either that or a hammer ???

My friend went away with her 15mth old and wrapped some of her toys in layers of newspaper. Kept her entertained for a good half hour!! I don't know if that's any good because your lo is a bit younger.

I don't think they'll let a hammer through customs :haha:

I can't help but I'd be interested in the answers. I'll be flying to Barbados with a 10 month old next year so I'll be listening out for any advice you get.

Ha ha ha .....i'll have to stick to the valium then ( and thats just for me !! )

Funny...but our doctor also suggested wrapping his toys up too ! xx

Oh its vile my daughter was 12months when I took her away and barely walking. The flight was 6hrs of torture, but we're still here to tell the tale :haha: sorry I have no positive input x

wrapping up toys is a great idea. He could also have his dinner, a snacky one that will take a while to eat ( raisens/breadsticks/carrot,veg sticks etc). When we first flew Aus was 17 months, we got all new toys that he hadnt seen before so they lasted longer than normal. And you can always let him crawl up and down the aisle. They was a little boy crawling the entire flight on our return flight xxx

o but i would personally use wrapping paper not newspaper and the ink goes all over them etc xx

Yeah I let tiff crawl up and down until some nob threw up there so I couldn't. Plus cabin crew were a bit arsey about it x

Been there done that, several times, flew Vancouver to Montreal round trip which is the same distance (5.5 hours).

We let ours play on the floor, jump around, etc. look for old ladies, they love to play with them. Might even give you a bathroom break! Egyptians are super family friendly (I was single when I went though but I'd take my boy there now), don't be afraid to allow others to entertain him, after all, they can't run away! LOL!

Don't try and keep him awake, don't worry about nap times - they will go to hell anyways, you really can't do much about this when it comes to the flight. I would swaddle (yes, at 11 months last time we flew), bounce, jiggle, rock and he screamed his head off for 30 minutes until he finally passed out. Try and sit as close to the engine as possible for the background noise. Ask the stewardess to not be loud when bringing drinks around.

Sorry, no drugs for us, although when she was bringing the whiskey around it sure was tempting!!!

i flew when my daughter was 7 months old so a little different on the age gap but she didn't sleep the entire time at the airport, and when we got on the plane she cuddled straight into me and went to sleep ... she NEVER goes to sleep on me! and i mean even as a newborn she wouldn't sleep on me. we were on a 4.5 hour flight and she slept from take off till just after we landed which was fantastic! make sure you take a dummy or a small bottle of water so that LO can suck on that during take off and landing, it will help with the changing pressure in his ears as thats usually the biggest problem during take off and landing.

Good luck :)

What about a portable DVD player and a couple of his fav films/programmes, your lo might not watch a full DVD but it may pass on 10/15 mins here and there.
Wrapping up his toys is a great idea you could also buy a couple of new cheapie toys which may get played with for slightly longer

we've just been to greece with our one year old. i took a bottle (he doesnt usually have a day time bottle any more) each way on the plane one to help with his ears for takeoff and two to hopefully help him sleep. he's a night mare for naps but the bottle worked and he slept for a good 2 hours each way. i think the hum of a plane is similar to a car and he was zonked!

i also took in my handluggage lots of small toys his favourite books etc. and lots of snacks. i took those organic carrot puff things etc cos it takes him a good half hour to get through a pack! my plan was to entertain him as much as poss if he didnt sleep and if all hell broke loose just keep feeding him treats (bad i know!)

anyway it wasnt half as bad as i expected!

oh and yeah we tried to keep him awake for a couple of hours before the flight walking him through the airport etc to have more chance of him sleeping. his whole routine went to pot on holiday anyway!
