Sorry, for the long post and thanks for reading, driving myself a bit potty after a scan this morning….

Based on egg collection day (we had ivf and my eggs were collected three weeks ago today) I am 5 weeks pregnant today. We had a scan this morning as they have been monitoring my ovarian hyper-stimulation syndrome (OHSS) and they checked my uterus while they were there - I think the doctor was hoping to be able to give us some good news.

At the start of scanning the uterus she said it looked promising, and she said to the other doctor in there while she was looking about “some light with a tiny bit of dark in it” that she could see. Basically she seemed to be able to see where the pregnancy will hopefully be but not much else. She said sometimes you can see a ring – even though she could not see this I did not get the impression it was game over, but she could not give me the reassurance we were hoping for either. Obviously I was really hoping for something more in the way of a sac and it seems a lot of people see sacs (is this what shows up as the ring she mentioned?) at 5 weeks? Is this the case?

I got a dark positive test 10 days ago and the conception indicator on the other one showed 1-2weeks (10 days ago), the conception indicator went up to 2-3 weeks 5 days ago. I checked today as well and got darker lines on two different tests (run out of the conception indicator ones).

I think one of the doctors could tell I was disappointed and he said that if I wanted to get my OHSS checked again to ring on Thursday and they could scan me again next Monday (I think he was giving me the option of another chance to see more in my uterus too). Not sure whether to do this or not as when we had a blighted ovum we had about 4 scans before it was confirmed and it was heart-breaking and stressful watching the empty sac grow every week. However, my last pregnancy ended in an ectopic so maybe I should, given the chance, check the location of the pregnancy.

The whole clinic has been great and the doctor this morning who did the scan is lovely and seems very competent. However I am hoping that as a doctor she has quite a bit of variety in her week and only does a bit of scanning (plus she is young), perhaps meaning that she is not as adept as some of the ladies who do that for a greater proportion of their working week. Maybe, I am just clutching at straws!!

If I don’t ring for an early one I think my next scan will be in 3-4 weeks after which the ivf clinic, if everything is okay, discharge me to our GP. Getting to that day would be AMAZING!! A long wait, but maybe it will give chance for the pregnancy to settle, with perhaps less stress. Obviously I will definitely be phoning if OHSS does get worse.

Not loads in the way of symptoms but the OHSS has been dominating most physical feelings. My breasts are sometimes tender and my stomach was burning this morning and I had to put something in it at about 4am. I guess symptoms can be down to the progesterone I am on anyway so maybe don’t mean much either way.

Thanks for any advice / shared experiences and well done if you got all the way to the end of this post!!

I dont want to read and run...I really don't know anything about this type of stuff, but I think that by the ring she means sack because I had a scan at 5 weeks with my last child and that was all that was there just a sac that looked like a white ring then 4 weeks later another scan showed the baby...I think there is hope there FX for you. :hugs: :flower:

I wish I could reassure you but 5 weeks today is just too early to get a reliable scan result. I would take them up on a follow up scan personally, rather than just waiting and having no idea what is going on. I hope in a few days/a weeks time you will see at least a yolk sac and perhaps the baby.

Hi

Firstly, so sorry for what you've been through with your two previous losses :hugs:

Secondly, I would go for the follow-up scan in a week's time. From what I've heard, 5 weeks is very early to see anything really I think. Everything is so tiny at that stage. Hopefully there will be a much clearer picture next week. I hope all works out good for you x

Hmm, I actually thought the dark bit was also called a gestational sac and you have to zoom in to see the yolk sac inside it which is like a white dot. Then there can be a bit of a lighter colour around that which is the placenta growing-- that is probably the lighter colour she saw? But you can't expect to see much so don't worry! Go back next week and put your mind at ease. My doctor offered to do weekly scans! He did them for his wife. I don't think I will do that many, but it's worth the worrying to go and have it done if you are at all concerned. And remember, it's your body-- so ask as many questions as you need to feel assured. Write them down if you need to and ask them to explain what's on the screen!

I had everything pointed out to me-- today was my 5 week scan too, and it turned out I am 5 weeks 2 days :) . And the dr probably thinks I'm over-reacting, but I feel better for asking it all!

Wishing you all the best!

Your scan sounds like my very early one. As for progesterone I am on it, and it doesn't give you prego symptoms just can make them worse xxx

Hi there,

Im also due to have a scan tomorrow and i will be 5 wks. I am hoping they will at least be able to detect a sac??

Ive had previous ectopic and am desperate to know if it is in the right place.

Stellar, what could they see on your scan today?

Girl76, I wish you lots of luck. Im afraid i know nothing about IVF treatments... My symptoms come and go, and i tend to feel little nausuous in afternoons, but fine in the mornings. Im sooo confused right now, and like you i feel impatient to know exctly whats going on. Unfortunately, its too early and we can do nothing but wait, i guess! Doesnt seem fair sometimes does it! have you had you HCG levels monitored? x

I think its really up to you.. try to make the best deiscion for yourself.. I dont know anything about it, but I had a 7 week scan, and you could see something, so perhaps if you have a 6 week scan you will be able to see something..

5 weeks is too early to see a formed shape - if you can i would go for the second scan and you should see a bit of a change.

5 weeks is REALLY early. We didn't have a scan after our IVF until 7 weeks (I didn't have OHSS but my ovaries were still swollen from the treatment at my last scan) when we could clearly see a sac/yolk sac/fetal pole/heartbeat. I wouldn't expect much at all at 5 weeks, you should see a bit more at 6 weeks and I'd probably go for that option and get scanned again, if nothing else they need to monitor your OHSS anyway.

Good luck, hope everything turns out well for you.

Thanks to you all for being so kind, am going to try and get the extra scan to check ohss (but really to check on the bean!). I think I will be writing a list of questions to take with me too! Gonna try and chill out for a few days. Loads of luck to those of you having scans as well x

Hi, I'm an ivf lady and had a internal scan 5w+5 due to slightly love beta numbers and we saw a small White speck and a pulsing heartbeat. We were v lucky to see a heartbeat and had been told it is usual to just see a dark area where it has implanted. Un a weeks time you should see a but more and it's worth the reassurance. We had an emergency scan at 7w +3 and saw so much more in such a short space. Now waiting for my private scan at weekend which we booked 3 weeks ago - it will be good to see it without a scare beforehand!!!! Fx for you x

Thank you lizlemon, she was definitely clear onseeing something so am crossing my fingers now! Good luck at the weekend and congrats xx

I agree with kat and PP, and get one repeated in a weeks time. It will ease your mind, and give some reassurance. Hugs!! I hope all is well, and you have a happy and healthy 9 months!!

I would definitely wait for the next scan before worrying too much! I went to the ER last week because I was bleeding pretty heavy... The ER doctor said that is had to be a blighted ovum because there was only an empty gestational sac. I went to my regular OB two days later and I had a yolk sac and a fetal pole. I was so worried for two days, but it turned out to be nothing at all.

I won't say not to worry because I know how impossible that is, but hopefully that helped a bit!

Thanks again to everyone for support at the start of the week when I convinced myself of the worst. Phoned them wed and mentioned ectopic worries and ohss and they booked me in for today - still in disbelief at seeing gest sac and yolk sac. The furthest we have ever got - going to try and take each day as it comes and enjoy it now. Thanks again and good luck everybody x
