Ok so my son is 5yrs old and he will be starting Kindergarten in September. I am desperately trying to teach either how to fully read or be on the way there by then. I wont say he's a hyper child but he is VERY active he likes to get outside and play and when he's not doing that he wants to watch TV. Spongebob Squarepants, Fairly Oddparents, etc. Anyways, my ? is how do I get him to sit still LONG enough to focus on reading a book INSTEAD of just naming the pictures. He can look at a book and tell u everything in it by the picture but can't read one word in it. It's crazy. Anyways, any advice? Thanks

I would look into the book Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons. Also what about getting him a Leapster? They have some wonderful games that teach letters and sounds and a bit of reading, though that alone won't teach him to read but will help prepare him more

If he's active, start by introducing flashcards with doing words on them (hopping, jumping, running etc) and make it all a big game. Then introduce cards with things around the house/garden and get him to run to/find the thing. The aim is to make the whole thing fun.

Hi hun,
In my children's school they learnt to read using Jolly Phonics ...

https://www.jollylearning.co.uk/jp.htm

They stary by learning the alphabet but saying the letter how it sounds and they do a action and a rime with it

For example 'L' you pretend to hold a lolly pop and then stick your tongue out to lick it and say L, L, L at the same time ... theres a song about licking lolly pops etc etc etc.

a 'M' was rubbing there tummy as if they were hungry and making a mmMMmmm sound at the same time.

They go on to learning that 2 O's together make a OOOOO sound and about the 'th' sounds etc.

Then when they start to read they can 'sound words out' the Jolly Phoic way.

My DD started Nursery at the age of 3 (when they all start here) and she did Jolly Phonics from day 1.

Now shes 4 (nearly 5) and is on Level 4 books which are 30 page long and about 20 words per page.

She loves reading and is very confident with it and i think its because of the Jolly Phonics .. she really loved learning the songs and rhymes and seeing me to all the silly actions too

Just make it fun, the better the game the better they learn ... you try to enjoy it too hun, teaching your LO to read should be fun all round.
Good luck xxxx

My son is 4 1/2 and will bestarting school in August. I started with the alphabet on one of those colour doodle boards. He loves the letters and he can write the full alphabet in order with no prompting now. I have named the letters phonetically to make it easier for him when he starts school as that is how they tecah them and he is starting to pick out words like 'the, it, and' and 'mum, dad'. Most kids going to school cant read and lots of them are very active and dont want to spend the time sittind learning words but that will be all be taught at school and thier levels of concentration will increase with age. I wouldnt worry about it, make things fun for hi but if he is not interested dont push him or he will go the opposite way and learn to not like reading etc.

Here in full first year children also learn the letters by their sound (well but maybe it is easier because although German isnt as phonetic as finnish or other similar languages is still a heck more phonetic than English..) I learnt to read by learning the alphabet, and by my sister teaching me to read. although I don't know hat your system is like at school but most pupils werent able to read when I came to school.
