This is my frst child, im in the United Kingdom and am hoping to make my first doctors appointment for this week. does anyone know what happens at the first appointment with the doctor, will it be too early to see his yet?

i booked my first doctors appointment when i was just under 5 weeks, the earlier you book to see the doctor the better.
they dont do much, mine only asked me if i smoked, put my name down for the midwife and said the midwife would phone within the next two weeks. its boring but its got to be done. P.s, im from the uk too!

my midwife will be coming to my house, she wont be doing a blood test because they do that up the hospital when you have your 12 week scan, alot of my friends did not have a blood tests with the midwife either. she said she is coming to my house because it will take at least an hour to ask all the questions ect and maybe listen to my little nemo's HB

Hi Mee

Im from West Sussex and just had my first appountment..you should be seeing your community midwife for this.

It's all paperwork (did you get a pregnancy pack?), a urine test and blood work. She'll talk you through the obvious: dont smoke, drink and eat liver!!

NHS dont do scans or heartbeat monitor until 12 WEEKS!! If you've had unusual cramps and bleeding they might check earlier..

Make sure you receive a scan appointment within 2 weeks of seeing your midwife or earlier..my rubbish GP hasnt even referred me yet...

Write a list of quesitions you want to ask cos you may forget and not see her again for another 5 weeks.

all in all, it's quite boring.. dont take hubby/partner as they'll only see you alone due to the nature of some sensitive and private questions (domestic violence, abortion etc).

good luck! my EDD is 5/5/2011...my LMP was 29/7/2011..let me know yours

xx

Have to agree with this. Doctors appointments are pretty pointless. Most the time they don't even test you to make sure! My midwife booked my scan there and then, so hopefully this will be the case for you too :). I'd call up and re-schedule with the midwife instead of the doctor.

my gp kinda crap too, im gonna book with gp this week and see what he says about midwife etc. im expecting him to just put my name down for midwife. 12 weeks is such a long time to wait to see or even hear baby!

and my lmp was 4th of august, edd is 10th of may, the exact date i was due to be born! although it might not be an accurate due date yet :)

totally pointless appointment. I just made appointment for booking in directly with the midwife but some surgeries insist you waste GP time first. They'll just spend 5 minutes telling you obvious stuff about not smoking or drinking and sort out your referral.

Yeah kat i think you have to see gp first unfortunately wish i could just hear the heartbeat! X

It would be great to hear a HB but mostly you can't as uterus is still behind pelvis (so I've read) and may cause worry. It may sound controversial but I'm thinking it's good to wait incase MC happened. I feel at least I wouldn't have an image in my head or dwell on the sound of it's hb. In an ideal world I'd love to see and hear it now but I'm keeping an emotional distance cos I'm terrified of sth going wrong and I'll be trillion times devastated.

Anyway let us know what happens and let's be patient. X

You won't be able to hear the heartbeat for some time! They don't listen for it until your 16 week appointment, then the midwife can pick it up on the doppler.
However you will be able to see the heartbeat at your 12 week scan. That will be your first scan unless anything happens to be a cause for concern in the meantime. It will actually look like a baby by 12 weeks so it is a nice time to have the first peek.

I totally understand the worry, the first trimester seems quite a long time. Private early scans are becoming quite popular these days. But before 8 weeks I wouldn't bother as earlier than that they often cause more worry than they solve!

Your GP will not actually do anything, so don't have any expectations of your GP appointment. However if you are 7 weeks already, they really need to get a swift move on with sorting out your midwife and scan booking. Round here the midwife sees you for the first time at about 8 or 9 weeks.

Is it the initial doctors appointment where they do blood work? Or will that not happen till i see MW x

That wont happen till you see the midwife. An mine didn't even happen then. They do my blood work when I have my 12 week scan for some reason :/ think it depends if your surgery does blood tests though, or refer you elsewhere like. x

Got the dates wrong! Im nearly 8 weeks not 7 haha. And i can DEFINITELY feel my uterus exactly on my knicker line is this even possible!? X

hi mee

have you phoned the gp to request a booking? i would phone your preferred hospital and call antenatal clinic and directly book your first booking appointment ASAP.

got my 12 week scan date: 24/10!!!! very nervous...but trying to keep my mind on work and actually pretending im NOT pregnant..bloody typical, all this time pretending i WAS..now I'm too scared..still feels like a dream..

fingers crossed

Yeah my appointments tomorrow mornin at 10 :) will the doctor feel my tummy or not? X

Just been to doctors and basically was a waste of time. She felt my tummy, why? And then asked for a urine sample to test for pregnancy, why? I have to ring Friday for results will it just be negative or positive or will they measure hcg levels?
