I'm popping over from 3rd Trim ;)!

just want to ask a holiday/trip related question.. I've always want to go travelling before settling down with children but since getting with my OH 3 years ago nearly priorities and ambitions change and I don't regret at all in anyway becoming pregnant so 'young' I'm 21.

I always wanted to go skiing, travel a little e.g. Australia etc like any young persons dream and due to lack of funds to do or go places like that me and OH decided to settle down and get our own house then though we'd NTNP and now we're due in December.

Just wondering if any of you ladies have been to 'adventurous' holidays/breaks e.g. Poland, Norway, skiing, longer flights to Africa etc with children in toe.

My parents have only just started doing what they want to do due to them being in a great place money wise also they don't have me at home. I'm happy to wait till my peanut has flown the nest and go on cruises and adventures like they do but I just want to know if it's possible to do and go on holidays with young ones?

If so where have you been and what age was your LO's?

I haven't but I do plan on going on really 'gap year' adventure style holidays when LO is 6+. I want him to have memories of stuff and think it will really enrich his learning. I want to go to China, India, Russia, Peru...I am thinking we will try some European countries first. Maybe Poland and Czech Republic first as I've already been there and then Bulgaria as LO has family there. I think it'll be fab!

My SIL took her LOs to Africa around the age of 5, if I remember correctly. My parents did a lot of traveling with us, initially mostly beach holidays to Southern Europe and the UK with side excursions, later more adventurous trips (in our teens). Anywhere with a good health system/hospital should be fine, IMO, just in case something happens (I personally would worry about a lot of African countries with young ones). And we were skiing well quite early (5? 6?), btw. Your LOs lives will be so enriched if you travel with them.

I've travelled a lot with my two but only to places in Europe. The longest flight was 3 1/2 hours and that was more than enough for the lo's.

We were talking about taking our eldest skiing but funds are a bit low at the moment so we can't - had we done so he'd of been 4 at the time.

I personally wouldn't go anywhere long haul until my lo's could read - 12 hours is so boring on a plane for an adult, let alone a child.

IRO what age were they - the first time DS went away he was about 8 months old and the first time DD went away she was about 16weeks. We didn't have any problems.

We've taken LO skiing - well he went to nursery. He had no problems. Tomorrow we're flying up to North Queensland for a week. When we leave Australia next year we may travel a bit. I think a lot of this is up to your family and to some extent your babys personality, type if trip, age etc. I certainly wouldn't rule any type of travelling out as anything is possible. My OH and I would like to keep traveling although we have to tailor those trips around Ollie more eg regular breaks, proper lunch stops etc. Luckily my LO sleeps in his buggy, the car and (fingers crossed) the travel cot.

We took LO to the Carribbean when she was 9 months old with no problems... she took Anti-Malaria medicine and we had a fab time. My OH is into Snowboarding and so when Lucy is abit older we may venture to Canada... I agree with another poster, as long as you are within reach of a decent hospital, anything goes.

xx

We travelled loads with my parents, but we did appropriate travel, iykwim? We went to family and friends all over the world. I think skiing is ok if LO can walk/understand instructions etc. Don't think safari is appropriate for under 5s. Poor countries with poor sanitation is a bit dodgey imo. But defo travel with them :)

We got skiing to Poland every year & have done for a few years now. I went when i was 17 weeks pregnant & skied & we took Alfie this year when he was 7 months old. There is a group of us always including my mum & dad which makes it alot easier. My OH snowboarded everyday & i just had a few days skiing, either my mum, or my mum & dad looked after Alfie while i skied. As soon as Alfie is old enough i'm going to teach him to ski so that we can enjoy the winter sports as a family. When we go next February i think i will defo take Alfie sledging there if we can find somewhere with enough snow.

The hardest thing i found about taking a baby on a skiing holiday was keeping him warm. It was -16degrees while we were there & he wouldnt keep a hat on or gloves so i ended up practically having to swaddle him in a blanket & then in the footmuff in the pushchair so he couldnt move his arms to remove his hat or gloves. I made sure he had plenty of warms jumpers, coats & trousers with extra layers of long sleeved vests & tights/baby leggings underneith.

I see nothing wrong with traveling with a baby/toddler/children, its great that they can be exposed to different things, even early in life. I'd love to go traveling to other places like Africa, India etc but that isnt a posibility in the near future, due to house buying & wedding planning.

I've also done Glastonbury festival while 35 weeks pregnant & then with Alfie this year when he was 11 months old, both totally different experiences from my normal excursions there. Both times i was told i was stupid for going & putting myself & my baby at risk (wtf???) & both times i proved to everyone that you can do it & enjoy it.

We are going on our first beach holiday in October for a week to Tenerife, i've not been anywhere hot for a holiday for 3 or 4 years so this is going to be an experience lol

We plan on doing alot of travelling with out LO as my OH has done lots in the past to developing countrys and I work for an expedition company, taking teenagers to developing countrys trekking each year. So we're feel comfortable enough to take LO along, but it's the expense more than anything!!

At the mo, LO is only 2 so we do adventury stuff in the UK for now such as wild camping in the mountains. He's already been up 6 of the highest mountains in the UK and Lakes. We take him to the climbing wall, he's been canoeing and in a few years time we will take him sailing!

There was a really good article in a baby mag about a yr ago about parents who took their 3 and 1 yr old on a round the world trip inc peru, india, aus... and said it was the best thing they'd ever done, and easier because of the children's ages.

We've been skiing with G twice now - at 6.5months & 18months. We had my parents eith us which kept costs down :) We took turns at skiing or George watching. He loved it especially sledging & walking in snowy woods.

He's also had long weekends in Switzerland and stays in a countryside house in France.

We are planning a month in Australia next spring/summer. G will be about 2y9m and new bub about 5months. Possibly also a jaunt around Ireland next autumn.

Our hols tend to include lots of outdoor activities kids enjoy anyway; we just scaled down the hikes :)
