Hello ladies, I hope you are all doing well :). A little bit about me... I was ttc for over 4 years, but didn't really have my life together wasn't in the right place and probably wasn't a good idea for me to b pregnant at that point in time. That relationship ended and I never sought fertility treatment because I didn't have the money and wasn't at a good place in my life. Now I am with a wonderful man and we've been together for a year and a half and things are going great. We were never very careful about not getting pregnant using the pull out/ ntnp method, but now after a year still not pregnant and after the 4 years with an ex of not getting pregnant I am concerned. We are ready now to be parents but I'm not sure if I can get pregnant. I recently went to the doctor and expressed my concerns told her I've done everything under the sun, charting, otc fertility vitamins, and anything else u can think of. She started off with the standard pap and did a pelvic ultrasound looking for cysts etc and I just got the call back that everything is normal. So my question is, a.) Does anyone have an experience like this and did u find out what was wrong? And b.) What is my next step and I know my insurance doesn't cover fertility so what are the costs? Thanks in advance for your advice and support.

Hi
So I am new here too, but did your doc recommend any next steps? I see you are from Northwest Washington, you could call a fertility clinic and ask too. :) I hear ads a lot of seattle fertility clinic and it looks like they have financing options. (It wouldn't let me post directly) I think the cost varies a lot depending on how much you need.

If you haven't already download a fertility app to keep track of everything so you have more information.

Doxi, the next step should be a panel of blood tests. I'm in California & my OB doesn't do fertility stuff so she referred me to Reproductive endocrinologist, eho ordered the blood tests. You will also need to do HSG test to make sure your tubes are open. After all of the tests are done, it'll be easier to figure out what is the issue. My insurance covered all of the tests except for IVF. So check with your insurance company and see what's covered. Call your OB first. See if she can run the basic tests for you. Then go on from there. Good luck!

I'm in the UK and here the GP send ppl to fertility clinic. Before GP can send to fertility specialist, however, both partners have to have -reproductive hormones checked (blood tests) and the husband has to has his sperm checked. So hormones and sperm for husband and hormones (on certain days of the cycle) for wife. Then the GP send the results to the specialist and the specialist send appointment letter.

Specialists then check is tubes are blocked and they come up with a strategy according to the problems they found during their investigation.

Hope it gives you some idea, I know it's different in the US but let me know what a fertility appointment/investigation/treatment looks like in US as I'll be soon moving country ;p

hugs

Thank you so much for your replies, it is hard hearing that there could still be other things going wrong :(. I have perfect cycles and ovulate for certain every month could my rubes be blocked? Would I have any signs or symptoms if they were? I'm quite worried about that because I've had chlamydia. :(

Doxi,
I can understand why that would be worrisome. Did you talk to your doctor about those fears? It would probably be the best avenue to go down or talk to a fertility specialist. Try not to worry until you know something more concrete...it is so easy to imagine worst case but it probably won't go to that. <3
Here is an article that covers blocked tubes: https://www.webmd.com/women/endometriosis/endometriosis-and-fallopian-tube-problems
It sounds painful. If everything is regular looks like a good sign. Hope it helps to put your mind at ease.

U ladies are awesome :) I really do worry too much lol. I'm just confused because my regular doc literally told me judging by my perfect cycles and the pelvic ultrasound and pap coming back completely normal that there shouldn't be any reason for me not being able to conceive. My oh has 3 kids and my ex that I was trying to get pregnant with beforehand had 1 child so I really don't think that it's something with him. I think I'm going to see about trying some natural remedies and then seeing if my doc will either refer me to a specialist or do further testing of some sort. Anyone have anything they are trying right now that they would like to share? :)

Doxi, I hate to say this but you better have your OB refer you to RE. I had chlamydia, a lovely gift from a cheater, and both of my tubes are blocked. I have regular period and rarely cramp. Even if I had some cramping, they were pretty mild. You definitely need HSG. The RE will also order sperm analysis and panel of blood tests for your DH.

Your ovaries can be working normally but if your tubes are blocked, which you won't know until you do HSG, sperms can't go through to meet the egg. There are no signs for blocked tubes.

I'm sorry to say this but your OB doesn't sound aggressive enough. The rule of thumb is 1 year trying for women under 35 and 6 months for women over 35 to do further check up more than pelvic check and pap smear. Of course it's your choice on what to do with the info. FX everything works out for you. :)

I have had chlamydia from cheating husband too  and had a HSG done after treatment and it showed both tubes open so it does not always result in blocked tubes , would still be a good idea to get the HSG done though as other things can cause blocked tubes and have a fertility center do a full workup on you and there are no signs of blocked tubes other then not being able to get pregnant.

Ive had it too, one of my tubes is mostly blocked but they didnt seem concerned about it because it was still partially open. The other one was fine

I would suggest an Re as well, depending how serious you are about getting pregnant asap. Supposing it is sine small easily resolved issue there are no guarantees when it comes to fertility and sometimes the sooner the better....at least if you have some answers you can know where you stand. There are as many ways to handle infertility as there are couples struggling, so not every case results in IVF. (a lot of ppl think that is the only way to get preggo with fertility)

Best of luck

Thank u. I didn't realize you weren't able to see if the tubes were blocked through just an ultrasound. I will ask to be referred to a specialist to get an hug done.

No they cant tell if tubes are blocked by normal U/S , with a HSG they inject dye through the uterus that flows up into the fallopian tubes ,while watching on ex ray ,if the dye spills out of the end of the fallopian tube that means its open if no dye spills that signals a blockage. it is painful but well worth it to know for sure if the tubes are open.

The procedure for an hsg isnt bad.. And I have anxiety attacks, if I can get through it anyone can.

Pushing the dye into the tubes feels crampy. I said it feels like the crampy lack of control feeling you have when you get diarrhea.. Except instead the pain is in the opposite direction. The whole thing didnt last more then five minutes for me. You will leak dye after so bring a pad. They usually tell you the results on the spot. And since you have had chlamydia before they should be giving you a course of antibiotics to start the day before and take for two days after.
