I use a tommee tippee flask to keep hot water in to make feeds as I go

I just wandered when they say to use boiled water cooled for 20-30 mins
could you say boil kettle - then rapid cool with cold water and use it that way ? Obviusly it would take 10 or so mins for it to cool but thats the same time it takes the water to cool from the flask so thinking if this is safe will do that and just use the flask for travel purposes as currently use it for home

x

I think they say boil the kettle and leave it to cool as it has to be a certain temp to kill any bacteria in the formula, it depends how cool the water that you'd be mixing it with was IYGWIM? xx

Just leave it to cool for 30 mins then put it in your flask and that should be fine to make feeds up with or is that not what you mean?

Just re read it and i dont think you meant that at all never mind, ignore me!

They say to make the feed when water is still hot to kill the bacteria in the milk powder. A lot of people however make the feeds up they way you are suggesting. X

The reason for waiting 30 mins is the water must be hot enough to sterilise the formula but not too hot as then it can destroy the nutrients.

I always have a bottle on the go. I make it up following the 30 mins instructions and then cool it by putting bottle in the fridge in a jug of cold water. Isobel doesn't have set feed times, she is a little and often snacker. If she's getting to the end of a bottle or its getting near to 3 hours old then I put the kettle on for next bottle. I find this gets around the time of waiting for boiling and cooling.

If we go out I make a bottle to take, and put ready made cartons in the change bag. I also use a ready made if she wakes in the night.

This is the way i have done this since my dd was a baby with no issues. I use boiled cooled water topped up with boiling water with the kettle to make up the milk fresh. I have had no issues. They tell you to do all these things because we live in a society where they dont want to be sued. I used to make up bottles of milk and put them in the fridge [shock horror!!] My boys all survived. I dont bother with the 3o min cool down nonsense..i do it my way! Boil the kettle, let it cool..put it in the bottle and then top up with boiling water as and when it is needed then add milk. Perfect !

We used to boil the kettle every morning then set the water aside in a jug on the counter so it was ready at room temp when we wanted to use it. I would also pre-fill all his clean bottles so they were ready to be mixed with formula....interesting.

The 30minute cool down rule is so the water is hot enough to kill bacteria (70degrees) but not so hot to scald, the idea it kills nutrients at boiling point is a myth I think, never found it anywhere on official guidelines. Lots of people (myself included) pre make bottles, rapid cool and then store in the fridge for up to 24hours. Then just reheat when needed, the WHO guidelines also state though that if that's not possible filling with boiled water and keeping until the powder is needed later on is ok. Tommee tippee also do great insulated bottle bags that keep your bottle warm or cool for a few hours, I use them to take pre made feeds out with me and take a flask of hot water out to reheat. Hope that made sense? If you search for bigbetty she had the WHO guidelines on her signature xx

^^ That's what I do.

The guidelines as far as im concerned are a lot of crap said just so that the milk manufacturers are not liable. I have been using cooled boiled water from the kettle up to around 4 oz, then topping with 2 oz of boiled water and then putting the powder in. All my 3 children have been fine with this method. Never had any stomach issues whatsoever. I mean if you were to do it by the book..you could potentially have a baby screaming, waiting for the water to cool down in the kettle for 30 mins!!! er..early in the morning wtf!!! How realistic is it that people do that!!!
[ oh i just take the boiled cooled water from the kettle..i dont premake them in the fridge either but thats fine if you like]
