I've looked through a couple of dozen 'potty' threads already, but not found one that really fits. Our LO, 17 months, has for the last couple of weeks been telling us when she's filled her nappy: she pats the nappy area and says "pot-pot, pot-pot!" I think she's doing this as soon as she's pooed, or possibly even still during, as when I get the nappy off the contents are all in one lump rather than spread all over nappy and bum. We're highly chuffed, because we've been trying to teach her this word by saying 'pot-pot' every time we take her to be changed, and it's worked! :happydance: Now, however, I'm not sure where we go from here. Is she already advanced enough to sit on a potty, or should we wait until she's telling us that she's about to poo, not that she just has? What sort of potty would you recommend - the ones I've seen so far seem ever so tiny for our big sturdy girl? Or should we go straight to a toilet trainer seat?

Good news! With Byron we've been giving him the opportunity to sit on the potty since about 18 months. Sometimes he'd do things and sometimes he wouldn't. Since having an awful bug a weeks ago he's half trained himself. We have been putting him on in the morning and before his bath then more recently whenever he has a change. For the past two weeks I think he's done only one poo in a nappy. He tells us by pointing to his nappy and we take him promptly. I think he is nearly there with poos though he doesn't have nearly as much control with wees yet.

We've been relaxed about it. I don't read parenting theories so I've no idea how others do it. We wanted him to be aware of the potty's use at an early age so that as his control developed he would know what to do.

Byron is a fatty and we have a normal cheap plain potty, I think a small one is better as he can fetch it himself if he wants to use it.

We've just started teaching him to pull down his trousers and take his nappy off himself. He's moving to toddler room now where they support potty training so there was not much use going for it before then.

Have you had a look at naked potty training? It worked for us x

Mmm, I've heard of naked potty training, but I've got my reservations, because we rent, so it's not our carpet!

My daughter is almost 18 months and she has just recently been doing similar things. She pulls at her diaper and says "potty" and signs the word "potty". I take her to the potty seat promptly but she has only made Poo or Wee in potty a handful of times. We try and take her after she poos if she doesn't make it so she knows at least even if after the fact that she is to poo in the potty seat. I feel we are making headway. We also let her have naked time in the evening and believe it or not we missed her weeing on the carpet! We had the potty seat right there too! So we need to be better at that. Good Luck ladies this is going to be a long journey I'm afraid!
