I have two kittens about 4 1/2 months old. We have had them since they were eight weeks old and they are driving me round the bend !!!

They are mostly kept inside as we can't get them spayed for another month but we do let them outside for a bit in the day and they tend to do their business in the garden.

The problem I have is that they have now decided they are not going to use the litter tray indoors. Yesterday was a nighmare. My OH was lay on sofa with duvet over him when one of them sat on his lap and p****d all over it !!!!!!!!!! Then about 30mins later the other one did a poo on the kitchen floor right next to the litter tray. The tray is always clean so I don't think cleanliness is an issue.

The ultimate disaster was last night when I decided to hoover the sofa and discovered two of the cushions were soaked down the sides and all underneath:growlmad: yep they've done their business there to. Luckily we have a warranty so its being cleaned for free but we have to wait until next bloody week.

I don't know what to do for the best should I get rid of them both ? I don't want to but I can't have this going on all the time. I work from home and can't have it smelling of urine when I have clients. The vet suggested getting a second litter tray and putting it somewhere else in house but again this affects me working from home.

Anyone have any suggestions ? Or want two kittens !!!!

Sounds gross but have you tried getting some of their poo and putting it into the litter tray?

We were quite lucky with Badger as she was litter trained when we got her...sounds like they may be trying to mark their territory...were they both from the same litter?xx

Yes from same litter.

They have always used it since we got them, its just recently that they have stopped. The vet also said about marking their territory and they probably didn't want to share the tray any more. She also said not to bother putting a second tray next to the first one, but there isn't anywhere else to put one !

Its just a nightmare I don't know whether to try and stick it out, get rid of one or take both of them to cat rescue. I would feel awful about splitting them up or sending them to a rescue.

It sounds terrible but I don't want to have to spend over £100 getting them spayed if they are just going to trash my house and end up giving them away !

Just try litter training them over again, i know its a pain but having their noses stuck in ther own business wont be nice for them, hope you get it sorted be a shame to tear them apart :( i'll google for you see what it could be x

hope this helps

Did anything happen in the litter tray? did you try moving it? I know someone who's cat got scared whilst in the litter tray and wouldn't go back. They moved it and the cat used it again. Also for 2 cats you should have 2 litter trays. We have 3 and in winter when they dont go out we have 3 trays (goes down to 2 in the summer).

Our youngest cat is a bit stroppy and went through a phase of weeing on anything on the floor (ie if you left a bag, towel). This started when the neighbours new kitten walked in the house when the door was open. She still does occasionally, but its just something we have to deal with.

They don't just start doing it for no reason. Is there a cat behaviourist at your vets you can speak to? Feliways also helps to calm them down so you could maybe try one of the plug-ins?

that's really unusual as cats like to be clean and actually use a litter tray. although i've always trained mine when they've had their mum around so she kinda showed them the way!!

You need to make sure where they have pee'd or poo'ed is thoroughly cleaned with something like Urine Off to remove the underlying odours that we can't smell, but they can. If they can smell where they have scented they will return repeatedly.

I would get a second litter tray, and take them to the vets for a check up to make sure it isn't a UTI making them urinate in places they shouldn't. Feliway is also meant to be very good - it's a pheremone releasing plug in which seems to be a deterrent.

Keep putting them in their litter tray after meals as well  I can't trust my two overnight not to try and piddle on the sofa when they are unsupervised, so lock them out of the lounge at night, and they have their own beds in the spare room x

Have you changed the litter or anything close to the trays? Also, any major events which may have caused stress/ upset?

The recommendation for litter trays is one tray per cat plus one extra. They should be placed in different areas of the house and not in places of heavy traffic.

I second the suggestion to get them both checked over by a vet too just to rule out any medical issues.

i have 3 cats and 3 litter trays. cats don't like sharing litter my 2 older ones were good till about 9 months to a year then started having accidents added another litter box and they were good. they find it offensive to share as it is there territory.

had two kittens together male and a female, i had the same problem, the male was dominant and wee'd everywhere so his sister would copy. In the end they had to go to a cat rescue :( i felt so guilty but the vet said there was nothing i could do plus i was pregnant so it wasnt the greatest thing for me to be dealing with. He told me because the male was dominant getting rid of one wouldnt helpthe matter either. xx

You need at least 1 more litter tray, 2 more is ideal (1 per cat & 1 spare)

if they are a reasonable size & have a clean bill of health after an examination then many vets will consider early neutering; if it is behavioural getting outdoors may help.

Use biological detergents to clean up messes and remove smells.

Make sure litter trays are not near food or bed

Make sure litter trays are cleaned regularly

My cat is just over 4 months and is already neutered - maybe they do things differently in America? I think getting them fixed could certainly help them be less territorial.

Once they get "fixed" things will get easier. Is the litter box near the door that they use to go outdoors? That may also help as well.

I wouldn't say to get rid of them. Once grown, they will be a huge joy - that's why you got them in the first place :) Good luck :)

My female cat started doing this at about 4 months old before we got her "done", as soon as she got neutered we have had no problems with her.

How long till she can get done?
