I've been a semi vegetarian (I only eat fish, but rarely) for a year and a half. I'm FINALLY pregnant again after mc, and my DH told me he wants me to eat meat again for the baby's sake. He was dead serious.

So, because it's his baby too, today for breakfast I actually had a meat sausage just to prove to him I was willing to do it. Not the healthiest start, but it's a start at least. :D

Any other vegetarians go back to eating some meat while pregnant?

Is this post for real??
Firstly vegetarians dont eat any meat or fish ever, so you weren't a vegetarian in the first place, and if you where why would you eat meat because your boyfriend asked you too for the babies sake. How is meat going to benefit the baby?
Confused....

some vegetarians do eat fish, it classes as vegetarian to some people as well as meat, if people dont eat fish it can also be classed as vegan..

Also if u feel its better for the baby to eat meat and u agree its ur choice and goodluck

oh and meat contains high levels of protein which vegetarian meals cannot provide for ur body, thats why alot of vegetarians have to take tablets ( i have quite a few veggie friends) also meat especially lean meat gives u iron, so u can benefit from that without taking pills

I assume storm4mozza that you are not a vegetarian or a vegan as you clearly don't know what you are talking about. Doolittle is exactly right, the OP was not a vegetarian in the first place. She was actually a pescatarian if we are to be specific. Vegetarians eat no meat or fish. Vegans eat no meat, fish, dairy, eggs, honey. Every nutrient can be found in a vegetarian or vegan diet. You just have to know what you're doing. In fact it is fairly well known that a veggie diet is healthier than a meat one. I had an extremely healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby so clearly there was nothing lacking in my diet. As an ethical vegetarian I could not have eaten meat or fish in a million years as my conscience would not allow it.
At the end of the day, it's bostonblonde's choice but if there is a discussion to be had on the subject, at least let it be an intelligent and informed one.

without this sounding like im attacking coz im not but this post seems a bit rude, she wasnt asking for opinions on what she is doing she was just asking if any other veggys have put meat back into there diet for babys sake.

anyways i think what ur doing hun is great for ur baby, if u feel comfortable to eat meat now and again for ur BABYS sake then good on you, personally im a meat lover dont go a day without it but if i was a veggy id prob do the same as u not to say eating no meat is bad for baby coz its not i just believe that eating meat during preg benefits both you and baby :) also good on you for taking OH's wishes into consideration its both ur baby and he does have the right to want best for his child just like you do, i like that ;) xx

I was under the impression that i was ALLOWED my own opinion. it seems two posts ive read today seem rude towards me but i wont mention names or get nasty ill be the mature adult :) plus im an ex chef, in some peoples OPINIONS fish is classed as vegetarian

Haha, I know I was never a "true" vegetarian. I'm a pescetarian, because I did very occasionally allow myself fish when no other options were available. But I haven't eaten "meat" (as in, animals that are not fish) in a very long time, so this is a big change for me. I was just wondering if anyone else has gone back to eating meat during pregnancy, that's all. *shrug*

Every nutrient can be found in a vegetarian or vegan diet. You just have to know what you're doing. In fact it is fairly well known that a veggie diet is healthier than a meat one.

This is not true. Vegetarians and vegans can be very healthy, but a great number of them are not because they are deficient in B12,iron, and protein. A few studies show the veggie diets are healthier, but there are also a great number of studies that show the exact opposite, so you can't just pick and chose your sources and say that it is a well known fact. Some veggies and vegans exhibit "Failure to Thrive" which can be very unhealthy.
My personal observation of vegetarians and vegans seems to indicate that they usually eat a lot of processed food which I think is a lot less healthy than eating a tiny amount of red meat each day to get enough iron and protein. Lots of pregnant women have problems with anemia and need about 30mg of iron each day, and a cup of broccoli only has about 1.2mg, but red meat has a lot more iron and it is much more readily absorbed my our bodies. So I'm not saying that you have to eat meat, but just because it is a choice that you have made doesn't mean that it is the only right choice.

To the OP I would recommend talking to your doctor, since your DH isn't necessarily right either. If you really want to stay veg (or pescatarian) you may want to take supplements to make sure you aren't deficient in anything. They aren't usually that well absorbed by the body but they should be good enough, just make sure you are tested for anemia. And if you want to try eating a little bit of meat each day don't let anyone pressure you into it our guilt you out of it, it is your choice and you and your baby can be healthy either way.

OMG!! Why do some posts end up with people verbally attacking others!!! This should be a light hearted forum where people can ask others for advice not get shouted down for the OP's remark she dared call herself a veggie! Instead of making her feel like complete imbosile that she can't possibly be a veggie and how I'll informed she is you could have quite easily have suggested she could carry on the way she ate and advise her of what other supliments you may have taken! There's enough bad sh*t on here with girls worrying about stuff with their pregnancies without needing to make them feel worse! I'm not a veggie but I'm sure there's alot of women who carry on their usual veggi diets and they have healthy prenancies! Maybe talk to your midwife o/b to see how you can go about it.. Take your other half with you for reassuance for him!

Tina I sooooooooo agree. I am in shock at the responses here.

Well, I was a "lacto ovo" vegetarian (meaning only animal products were dairy and eggs)for 10 years before I got pregnant. And the only reason I gave up meat is because it didn't agree with me. Lots of stomach upset since I was a preteen.

I think people get all uptight because they feel "vegetarians" are "vegetarians" just because they don't agree with the kiling of animals. Just had to put it out there that this is not always the case. So if you eat some animal, or "fish" products you are not "true" to your beliefs and are a fake or something... blah, blah, blah.

I am sooooo sorry that people feel it is their place to judge you when all you wanted to know was a simple diet question.

Well to answer your "question", yes I did and only because as soon as my morning sickness was done, I woke up one morning and said to my husband "I want barbeque ribs LOL, no one could believe it. I was so scared that I would get deathly ill because it had been so long..... but if thats what baby wanted, thats what baby got lol! So we went to one of our favorite resturants and I ate pork ribs... and they were awesome, and I didn't even get sick. Been eating meat ever since without the GI issues.

I do know as a Nurising student that if you are a vegetarian and pregnant, that you can and will have a happy and healthy pregnancy as long as you make sure that you get all the important vitamins and minerals that are needed to support you and baby, so don't feel you have to eat meat (your choice), but I would definitely make an appointment with you doctor and/or dietician to make sure you are supplemented well.

Good Luck!!!:hugs:

Veggies can eat fish, I have been one for 10 years but dont eat fish to be honest I think it's stupid saying not to eat meat and then going and eating a fish but hey that's my opinion. Just because you don't eat meat doesn't mean your any less unhealthy!!! I am pg now and have a 3 year old that was born at 7lbs 15on very healthy, perfect pregnancy and 6 hour delivery with no complications. My midwife knows I'm a veggie, nothing said by her. Your boyfriend need to do some research!

Wow this seems to be a thorny subject - I wasn't expecting to read such rude replies from a few people! I was a "true" vegetarian (no meat or fish) for years, but started eating fish sometimes because although it is entirely possible to get every nutrient you (and your baby) needs with a veggie diet, it can be tricky if you don't have much time to shop & prepare meals...this is just my own experience, also I moved to France which is distinctly veggie unfriendly!

To answer the original question, yes since getting pregnant I have started eating meat again - just chicken for now. The reason for this is not so much because I think my baby will suffer otherwise, but because the morning / all day sickness and food aversions have really put me off fish - I can't even smell it without wanting to heave. Seeing as I work full time and study part time I don't have time to cook balanced meals everyday so decided that I needed the protein from meat.

My veggie motivations were ethical - objecting to industrial production of animals for human food - so I just make sure it is free range, organic, etc.....it makes me feel a bit better.

I haven't yet decided if I will branch out to other meats, or what I will do when I have had my baby. I will just see how it goes.

good luck deciding anyway!

It will be a cold day in hell if I ever ate meat again.

There's absolutely no reason to start eating meat if you eat a good, balanced diet as a vegetarian.

To be honest I don't think there's any way I could actually eat meat after all this time, I'd vomit.

Just cannot stand the thought that something might have suffered in pain just for me to eat it :(

Each to their own though, those are just my views.

i've never called myself a veggie before but i certainly prefer my veggies over meat, dunno why though, but if people make a roast for me i leave the meat most of the time.i must say i think there are so many 'catagories' people can put their eating habits into that getting angry at someone for saying they were a veggie is pathetic, dont be so serious!!!!! Everyone has their thoughts and feelings but to put someone down when they want help is just being a bitch.

I can't talk from personal experience but my friend who was a vegetarian decided to eat fish during her pregnancy.

I'm sorry the OP is getting so many stupid responses. She wasn't asking a political question for goodness' sake. Nobody cares about anybody's reason for being vegetarian or non vegetarian, the reason another person is a vegetarian certainly cannot influence whether or not I will eat meat (which I do, quite happily). But then again I grew up on a farm so I'm wise in the ways of the world. Vegetarians don't bother me unless they're spouting political c**p.

To the OP, while you can have a perfectly healthy diet being a vegetarian you do have to be extra conscious of what minerals you are taking in, pay special attention to vitamin B12 especially. Then again if you're already eating fish, eggs, and dairy then you might be able to continue your vegerian lifestyle. Protein is not only found in sausage. If you want to venture try some turkey or chicken. You don't have to eat steak, hamburgers and hot dogs to get protein.

A good friend of mine who is a meat eater went off meat completely during her pregnancy. She coudn't stomach the sight of meat for a full 9 months. After the birth of her child she's right back to eating meat like before. So it's possible. Whatever you do, consult with your doc first and let all the crazy vegetarians duke it out between themselves.

Wow the title was any vegetarians putting meat back on the menu wasn't it? Not "any vegetarians that don't agree with my choice come and try to belittle me" this is a support forum and some of these responses are anything but.if ur not putting meat back on the menu then why come in and comment in the first place,if u care so much start ur own post about staying on ur strict diet throughout ur pregnancy,no need to be so down rite bloody horrible xx
