Hey girls, I know this thread could cause a bit of controversy as sone people believe it should be left well alone for midwifes only but I couldn't resist. I tried to have a feel last week & I could feel something where my finger was going inside, but it was just one finger & I couldn't really feel much so left it at that. I've just tried it again now - there hole is much bigger, I can fit 2 fingers in & it feels really slimey. I haven't had my show yet so I presume that's what I could feel. I reached up a bit further & I could feel the head!! It mist have been a couple up cms up but there's no mistaking that I could suddenly feel something rock hard. I then got a bit scared so left it at that lol. Has anyone else felt there's? x

My husband tried to do a homemade sweep (desperate times, desperate measures lol) and found the cervix. I haven't lost my plug so he found that too but said he could get his finger inside my cervix but only 1.

Not dared do it myself though

It's up to you but I think you should leave it alone it's not gonna make any diff to when the baby arrives. Midwives use sterilised gloves, you don't want to get any infections. I understand frustration and curiosity tho xx

My Dr. told me it was just fine if I wanted to check my cervix as long as I had clean fingers. The issue was that I could very rarely reach it! I felt my sons head a few times too, she said this was fine as well! Just make sure your fingers are clean!

Does it mean labours looming or doesn't or really have much relevants? x

my friend checked hers and was a 3...she kept checking that day and "aggravated" her cervix and boom, LABOR kicked back in and she had the baby 8 hours later haha

PLEASE NOTE: she did have clean hands.

Lol no don't worry, I wash my hands before & after each time I check. But that's quite good to know. I was gonna check again today, part of me wants to the other part says "no just leave it now!" lol.

My DR also said it was okay to check mine myself. As long as you wash your hands in hot soapy water before and after and don't actually interfere with anything.

So I think she means I can have a feel about, see how many fingers would fit in but not to go poking about in there or anything. I've heard of inexperieneced MWs accidently breaking waters while doing these exams too so be really careful.

It does sound like something is happening though but we can walk around up to 3cm dilated for a few weeks I think!
xx

Admittedly I have had a feel too, as long as you are gentle and aren't poking too hard (who'd want to?!) I can't see that it is much different than making love and lets face it our freshly washed hands are cleaner than our partners bits :haha:
It has been about a week since I checked, my cervix was really high and slightly dilated (haven't got a clue how much, didn't want to go too far poking around).

Ive been in hospital alot this week and had 3 examinations, I had false labour Saturday which resulted in gas & air and morphine, 4 hours of excrutiating pain then it stopped, I know what labour feels like as I have 2 kids already. However, my cervix was closed, gutted, firm and posterior. After the 2nd exam I had tons more pains for a few hours but the midwife refused to examine me due to infection, they will only do it if really necessary. However, I was examined again last night with a speculum as I thought my waters had gone but it wasnt, and to my delight the pains must of done something. Although cervix still closed which is unusual anyway as I have kids already, the cervix is now soft, thin and stretchy, she can feel the babys head just behind it so basically the head cannot go any lower now, and the cervix is now low and not posterior, (would that be anterior now) dont really know all the tech terms lol! So I am gonna have sex and keep mobile and I am hoping it will be my week this week. I will not touch my cervix anymore though as I would hate for infection.

p.s. whilst was there an induction started 2 hours before, resulted in 4 min birth and I bloomin missed it as was walking and in the same bed the night before a woman gave birth on the ward in 20mins, missed that too lol!!!

I agree .... i mean we all know men arnt the cleanest of creatures!!!

I really want to have a feel but i have never done it and i'm too scared to ..... i might have to ask DH to see if he'd have a feel tonight, i'd really like to know if i'm dilated at all.

I WILL SUPERVISE THE HAND WASH!!!!

I used to check mine but when I started to lose my plug I stopped, however I havent had a show or anything else for a while now so I checked this morning and my cervix feels lower down and I can easily get one finger in with room spare so I think Im maybe 1.5cm dilated, after I checked I lost another chunk of my plug (the thing is never bloody ending) and now I have back ache (which could be from that or could be that I just vaccuumed the stairs)

Im not sure if its sign of anything imminent, Im hoping to check one day and be at least 4cm so I can go straight to labour ward hahaha x

how do you no you've reached you cervix??? is it possible to poke baby in the head by mistake??? this is all new to me :) :)

I haven't tried but wouldn't mind when I'm a bit further along! Don't know if I dare though or what the hell I'd be looking for  lol x

This has a diagram x

Sorry to sound a bit thick here ladies but how do you know you have reached the cervix? And how do you know how many cms dilated, if any, you are?

I found a site online that tells you what to feel for. When I first ever tried a few weeks ago I couldn't really feel anything, but as the weeks have gone on and it starts to feel different you realise your feeling the right thing as it gradually changes x

Haha, Its eased now, I think it was from hoovering!!!

Alot of people check theres when they are ttc conceive. I had an internal the other week and the doc stuggled to find my cervix even with a spectrulm (spelling) so i dont know if i would find mine.
Im tempted to try at 37weeks. My OH works in the mecial profesion (first aid thogh so couldnt do it) but he has gloves so if i want to be extra precourtious i can use them to so shouldnt risk infection
