Anyone else actually looking forward to the budget thingy tomorrow?

sorry but  at that VAT rise.. ridiculous!

i'd rather a vat rise than a huge increase in income tax, national insurance, fuel prices etc! xx

you can avoid VAT to a certain extent by not buying things that arnt essential so were lucky its not income tax which you cant avoid

Also, remember this is only year 1.. they have another 3 left in office so...

Hmmm, im undecided on it yet, i think their plan for business taxes looks good, expecially their plan on making new businesses exempt from NA for the first 10 employees.

Child related ones im on the fence, i read someone they were stopping child benefeit completely for thos who earn 40K and more, not just making changes in the tax credits area? Can anyone confirm that, ive been at work all day so i didnt see it?

Im glad about HIP and SSP though

Not impressed, not pissed off either, will wait and see how it effects me moneywise, im right on the borderline of it being justifiable for me to actually go to work, so who knows which way it'll swing!!

Sorry another Q, the public sector pay rise for those under 21K, it said £250, is that per annum, or £250 over the course of the 2 year freeze?

I agree to an extent, but the exemptions haven't changed (food, children's clothes, books etc are all still zero rated) and even at 20% we still have one of the lowest rates of VAT in Europe ... and in many of those countries it is charged on literally everything.

We have in truth become a little spoiled ... when I had my children in the early 90's my mortgage interest rate was around 16%, the poll tax was in force (which was more than my council tax is even now!), there was no HIP, no SureStart, No Minimum Wage, Tax Credits weren't even a twinkle in anyone's eye and VAT was 15% even then ...

And it's not as though I'm in my dotage and muttering about the war years ;) ... some of the ladies on here who are currently expecting are only a couple of years younger than me.

I think 2.5% is too huge of a jump considering just last year it went down to 15%.

If you put it in to context, did you notice that much of a difference when it went back up to 17.5%? I really don't think it will cripple people.

I think the VAT is a huge jump but I really do think it could be worse.
and PP I thought they were just completely freezing child benefit? Not sure that theyre cutting anyones?

No they're not cutting CB. Just freezing it :) So no increase in it over the next 3 years, the increase from last year was 30p!! x

Thanks, i thought it was a little odd as it has always been the one thing you recieved regardless of income.

I remember last year when the vat decrease made all the prices in primark go crazy ;) xx

Haha! Trust you to have that as memorable tax moment, :haha: What did it do? Push t-shirts up to £1.00 or did it make them even cheaper?! :winkwink: xxx

Thinkng about it, I think the child benefit freeze is possibly the best thing they've done in a long while! Lets face it, no one at all is even going to notice not having the 10p or whatever it is that it goes up by each year.. but when everyones 10p's are all added together, thats a hell of a lot lof money!

LOL it made them nice and cheap actually, apart from you'd pay like 1.93 for something! Was very random lol!! The change I had in my purse last year was a nightmare! :winkwink: xxx

Yup!! Im impressed with the way they have handled things. Im glad the attitude of "throw more money at a problem and it will go away" has gone completely. xx

LOL! Oh yeah, our prices at work in the canteen went all funny, annoyed the crap out of me trying to find an extra penny for toast in the mornings..went from 50p to 51p..gah!

Well you better get saving for Primarni :winkwink: xxx

Yes I did notice. IDK maybe its cause I do our ward order at work? 20% VAT on everything is gonna be a big difference to what we can afford to buy on our crappy budget. £315 for 24 patients a week doesnt go far as it is :(
