I'm dog mad anyway, was brought up on a farm so there was always at least 4 collies around me.

Since my parents moved away 6 years ago I havent had one around me-really hate it! I'm always looking at puppies or rescue dogs online because I want one so much!

OH isn't 100% on dogs but he's had the opposite upbringing to me i.e thinking all dogs will rip your face off but he wants one one day (in fact he'd rather have a baby!) I like rotties, staffs, alsations....he likes spaniels

Is this because I'm broody? Anyone else get like this? Feels like I'm trying to fill the void of a baby!

That's what I have my cat for. :) He's my baby.

I know my daughter would love to have a dog but it would not be allowed where we live. You could always go to a shelter and play with some!

Haha, I just saw the title of this thread and thought, "craving to eat a dog?" Hahahahaha. I can't stop laughing. Sorry.

I know what you mean.
Sometimes I feel if I could just get a puppy I wouldn't feel so broody all the time, like it would ease the TTC heartache and all.

I do have a cat, but it's not the same. Sure he's smoochy alot of the time, but I can't just go up and hug him whenever I want, he has to come to me, otherwise he cracks the s***s and doesn't want to know me.

And I think training a dog would be absorbing enough to help get my mind off TTC for at least a few hours a day.

But OHs mum already has two dogs, and is convinced that she'd have to walk it etc. (she walks hers everyday, off leash so she has to watch them carefully) she doesn't want a 3rd dog to look after.
It irritates me because she wouldn't be the one looking after it, I would. And I would be the one walking it, on the leash! But doesn't matter what I say, I still can't get one.

I'd love to get a toy poodle. My mum has one that's just turned one and she is the most affectionate, funniest, intelligent little dog ever. Mum uses the 'puppy cut' style to trim her, so she doesn't look half bald like the show-dogs do.
But if OH and I ever get any land, or even just a decent sized backyard, I'd love to get a border collie (preferably black and white) and maybe a Great Dane (for the land).

I often want to add another dog to our family, but always bring myself back to reality, as we currently have a 1.5 year old lab, who is still a bundle of energy as it is! We waited a long time to get him - until we purchased our own house and made sure we had the time and room for him. But I was like you at first - I grew up with dogs, cats, horses, etc., and when I moved out of my parent's house, I had nothing and was lonely without them all! Now I have my boy, and he will be my baby forever, but he sure is a lot of work. It is all worth it in the end, of course, and I know he will be fabulous when we have another addition to add one day (in human form :) ).

^ Thats EXACTLY what I thought!

 trust me to word it like that! I read it afterwards and I thought it sounded like that....what a wally! Just to confirm, I don't eat dogs!

Glad I'm not the only one who wants to put my maternal insticts towards a dog. My stepdaughter only wants a puppy though...keep having to remind her that they dont stay that way.

Puppymom - did you find that it helps to fill the void for a bit?

Oobies - I know what you mean, I love my cat to bits but she does her own thing most the time, so more like a teenager

its possibly b/c ur broody, i wasnt when we when got our rescue pup 3 years ago, only probably is its actually made broodiness come on for me b/c its like having a baby (in a sense) obviously ur not needed as much as u are with a baby but my "pup" become my baby :)

When we got him it was more to fill the void of having no pets at all around - and that it did help. I don't know if it's helping to fill the void of wanting children, however, if that's what you mean! He does remind me some days how much work he is though, and it's okay to wait a bit for a baby!

Yes I agree!

It is because you are broody and want sometime to 'take care of' and dogs are so perfect because they love you back!

My hubby and I got our collie 3 years ago and lots of my coupled friends and family have got a dog instead of a baby, its good practice, but best if the dog gets a few years old before you actually have a baby.

I have my 2 girls who are our substitute babies and they are now 2 years old and we have had them since 8 weeks old I could not live without them but there is still the huge void of a LO! :)

I'm trying to convince OH to let me have a dog, but since we both work 9-5 5 days a week I know it's not possible.

I have my 2 cats who are my babies- they're 2 and I've had them since 7 weeks...OH even calls us mummy and daddy! It's really sweet as when I got them OH cried! And now he's as besotted with them as I knew I'd be. He worries about them like they're his children, and he says they make him a better person (he's never had to take responsibility for anything before)...

We've had our German Shepherd since she was 7 weeks old, she's now 16 months and is still really lively and a handful at times.

She's still a baby herself (she'll always be my baby) and it has made me realise that we need to wait until she is a little older and has calmed down more before we have a baby.

My sister is due her baby in 4 weeks so we'll see how she reacts to a newborn...

We are quite lucky in that my 2 girls have always been around children since got them, from newborn up to 5 year olds so we know they will be perfectly fine when we have a LO of our own :)

Ours is regularly around a 2/3 year old (he was 2 when we got her, 3 now) but she's not really been near any children younger than that. I'm not sure how she'll react to crying.

And when I was wrapping a toy for my friend's baby for xmas she tried to pinch is because it rattled :haha: She will want all the toys for herself :haha:

I did this exact same thing! I was wanting a baby and OH said no, so I got a dog. She's a little beagle and a joy to be around. She's my little baby. OH calls me Momma, it's adorable.

I still want a baby, but taking care of here helps take away some of the want.

I quite like beagles, are they good for someone who's not used to dogs at all(OH)?....this one is too cute!

I had beagles all my life - but now have a lab. Beagles are absolutely loveable dogs, but can be a lot of work if you don't train them properly. Saying that, we have always had great ones - but I do know of several who would tear the house apart when nobody was home. Ours never did that, but I would be crate training if that was the case! They are natural hunting dogs, and ours always had a chance to hunt or at least get out and run. They are not generally dogs that you can just let out in the front yard - usually they will end up just putting their nose to the ground and running! Saying that, if I had a fenced yard, I would probably get another beagle. For now, my lab is enough!

Yes I am. I didn't used to be a dog person but a couple of weeks ago someone abandoned one outside our flat in the middle of the night. He was yelping and weeping so my husband and me took him in and looked after him until the dog warden could come and get him.

I often wonder what happened to him. He was such a sweet loving boy - he just wanted to be cuddled all the time. After that I was a total dog person!
