So I went for my 19wk ultrasound today and the tech took 2.5 hours to do it!!!!! It was horrible I was so stressed out, she said nothing while doing it. She then went to get my DH and DS and showed us the baby moving around and stuff and said it was hard to get good shots as my placenta is right in front and I am heavier. She did say at the very end that everything looked good. I think she was a new tech as well. I was heavier with my first two pregnancies and my placenta was in the front with my DD but they never took that long to do the ultrasound. I should have said something but I just lied there in fear for what felt like an eternity. Now I am so worried that that much ultrasound exposure has hurt the baby :sad1:

Anyone else have a crazy long ultrasound?

Wow! That is a long ultrasound. I think mine lasted all but 15-20 minutes! Every hospital is different I'm sure..

Well I have been ultrasound a hell of a lot, well when I was pregnant with DS. At 12 weeks I had 4 scans in 1 day as I had to try and get him to move for measurements.
I had one a week later as they still didn't get the measurements.
I had one at 20 ish weeks, normal dating scan.
Then I had one at 24 weeks and one at 28 weeks.
One at 30 weeks, one at 32 weeks, one at 34 weeks and one at 37 weeks. These last 6 scans were consultant scans.

All of them lasted about 20 mins, so he spent a lot of time under the ultrasound machine & turned out perfectly healthy in the end.

My last ultrasound at 13 weeks was very long too at about 2 hours. Luckily the tech was kind and explained why she was being so thorough. My uterus had been previously diagnosed bicornuate, but she did not think that was the case. (They think its unicornuate now.)

I was also born without a left arm, and my doctor had asked her to check the baby carefully to ease my worries about it having any missing limbs. When the baby decided not to cooperate, she made jokes and chatted to me while she tried to get a better angle.

Thats terrible that your tech wasnt more communicative, but at least she let you know everything was ok at the end. I also dont think the u/s being so long will hurt the baby. Plenty of women need to have frequent or long ultrasounds for various reasons, and their babies are fine :)

Aww. She should have talked more since I'm sure you were imagining the worst. She was probably embarrassed that she was new to this and having trouble. Glad all is well though.

Both of mine have taken ages - because the blooming bump's excelled itself at lack of cooperation and does NOT like being disturbed!

12 week one it wouldn't move to get the nuchal measurement - cue much of me turning over and back to try to get it to flip into a good spot (and a very very cheesed off baby wailing arms and legs trying to get back to ITS comfy spot where the sonographer didn't want it to be)!

20 week on the sonographer had such a heavy accent I couldn't understand a lot of what she was saying (she was very softly spoken as well and I'm partially deaf in one ear) - but she was very kind, explained all the vital bits straight away, and then began the battle of epic cooperation. 40 minutes later, the baby shoved its hand out to try to push the probe away (think Madonna versus a paparazzi camera lens in her face for the sheer level of diva-dom), proceeded to roll over and give us a great view of her backside and we admitted defeat on that front!

I had weekly ultrasounds during the first trimester (history of miscarriages) and everything's still chugging along there fine (touch wood).

I'm not sure, my scan is next week thursday and my doctor said it would be a 45 minute scan!!!! I thought that seemed a little long.. I know they're gonna check the heart and everything to make sure bubs is okay, but 45 minutes? I thought 20 minutes or so.. I suppose everyone is different, but 2.5 hours is a long time.. don't they have other appointments and stuff? I'm sorry it wasnt enjoyable for you, I would have been asking a million questions if it was silent at 15 minutes...

With the other appointments thing - the clinic was actually really really quiet when we went at 20 weeks, was the first normal working day after New Year so I think a lot of people had been given appointments then and rescheduled them back a few days and similar - so we had no waiting at all, in fact the sonographer was sat there by the desk twiddling her thumbs as we walked up!

Not bad for the NHS considering the ante-natal department's usually jammed!
