Hi
i've just found out I have PCOS. Not entirely sure what this really really means, but I know I am very upset - having had a 2 day period only once in the last 8 months. At least I have a direction now - but the doc has put me on Metformin! Does anyone know much about this and what it can do? Please help, I am scared that I'll not get the one thing I've always wanted.. a baby. I am 32, and am so ready.....
please help!

metformin helps to balance your blood sugars, also it can act as a suppressant and or help with weight loss. its whats usually given to diabetics but us lucky pcos ladies also get the joy!
it can have some lousy side effects so you need to start gradual and work your way up! when do you start it and how much do you take?

Thanks so much for replying!! I feel a bit out there on my own at the moment so its great to have a reply!

I've been prescribed 500mg by my GP to try for 3 months. My BMI is 20.4, and have never had a problem with insulin or glucose - so was a little confused to why he'd prescribed this.... I am going on hols for a couple of weeks and thought perhaps better to wait until I come back (leaflet says no alcohol at all!!)....

I only found ot about the PCOS this week - and he's offered to refer me to a gyno too...but said we can try this first.??

500mg is a low dose so hopefully you wont have side effects. metformin sometimes helps regulate periods, i am lucky that i have regular cycles. i am on 2000mg and get the odd upset tummy. metformin is what they like to try for us with pcos, but you should question it if your not sure. they should really check your insulin resistance too.
your certainly not alone, there are lots of pcos ladies on here, was thinking of starting a group so we all know whos who?!
i would also ask for the gynae referral as they will do the important tests to check your ovulating, also to check your hormone levels and give you a full mot.

A group sounds great! Would like to be part of that for sure!

Thanks for the advice. its ice to have someone here that can offer advice!!:) I think that I will go and see my GP and get a referral etc, makes sense that way I think!

i was given metformin to help with the PCOS. my doc started me off at 250mg twice a day and i hated it because of the side effects i got so i stop taking it. TMI but had lots diarrhea and lots of tummy cramps and that freaked me out but the doctor said its normal so i pushed my self to take it and after a couple months it didnt seem to do anything. The doctor then up'd the dosage to 500mg twice a day. I lost 10 lbs and AF actually came on its own after months! i was excited and it pushed me more to make sure I took my meds. I am now at 500mg 3x's a day so hopefully its doing something!

I was given metformin over a year ago now and have been on it ever since. For the first 3 months i was taking only met and it helped a bit on the first month then it didn't really shorten my cycles after that so the dr also put me on clomid and i've been on both for 9 months now.

At first it made me a bit ill but after that i don't even notice i'm taking it but the doctors have told me just to keep on taking it as it can take a while for it to actually balance your hormones out!

I hope it works for you! Good luck!

Last September my doctor put me on Metformin. The side effects made me what to quit and a friend of mine who was pregnant at the time was also on metformin before getting pregnant convinced me not to stop. I am glad that I stuck with it though because it regulated my period and I got my BFP. My doctor insisted that I remain on the metformin after my BFP because I understand that having PCOS increases your risk of miscarriage (having suffered from one myself).

I hope that the metformin works for you and sending you lots of luck.

Hi Mrs H, i am on 500mg of metformin and have PCOS FS gave it me as thought may help insulin resistance, my BMI is 24 si in healthy range too. Been on it for a year, and am now taking clomid. Had few side effects on metformin, like sicky feeling and tummy ache but they soon passed. good luck TTC xx

Hi, I've also just started taking Metformin. My doc wanted to give that a try before referring me to a gynae. He reckons I have mild pcos - all bloods show I ov ok but testosterone is a bit on the high side so am hoping this'll help. Have been ttc no.2 for just over 2 yrs now and had 2 mc's last year. Also sneakily taken clomid this cycle too (doc said that would be the first thing the gynae would do, before he thought of metformin and a friend had a spare batch so thought would give it a go!) Thankfully had no nasty side affects from either just hope get my bfp soon.
Good luck to you all!
