What are your opinions on it? Did you have any side effects? Does it affect your mood or anything else?

How long did you go on it for and when you came off what happened.

Thanks!
:hugs:

I've not tried it myself, but we recommend it to our mums on NICU who are having trouble with supply. They've never come back to me reporting any side effects. Another drug that's used is Maxalon (an anti-emetic). I'm guessing you've already tried "power pumping" to kick start things.

For Domperidone, the British National Formulary lists these side effects (it is worth noting that most medication have some pretty scary potential side effects if you read into them, so I personally wouldn't worry much about this; but here it is):
rarely gastro-intestinal disturbances (including cramps) and hyperprolactinaemia; very rarely ventricular arrhythmias, agitation, seizures, extrapyramidal effects, headache, and rashes; also reported QT-interval prolongation

The hyperprolactinaemia is the side effect that you do want (it means that the hormone that stimulates lactation is produced more than usual in this case).

I used it for a while and I definitely had more milk when I was taking it but milk production went back down when I stopped it. It was about 18 months ago with my 1st baby so can't remember exactly but I think I took 2 tabs 3 times a day (poss 3 tabs 3 times a day...?) I bought the one called "motilium 10" and it was around £5 a packet which lasts just over a day so pricy enough. At the time I was taking it I saw some people on here who were able to get it on script, ie free. I had no adverse effects.

edit to add: I took it for 2 wks approx and stopped because of the cost basically!

I would also be interested to hear about anyone's experiences with domperidone. I was offered it but told that the chances of it helping were minimal because it is most effective with women who have established a good supply which has dwindled for any reason, whereas I never had a good supply. I was also told that my LO had got to the point that he was unlikely to "co-operate" with building a supply and the drug alone wouldn't do it. I decided against taking it because I am a bit funny about non-essential medication, but I do wonder if it might have done the trick.....

Domperidone(motilium) is the wonder stuff!!!!!!!!!!

I think you will be hard pushed to find any doc that will give you it unless your baby is in neonatal, as in those situations its even more imperitive that they get breast milk. My doctor would not prescribe it unless I got confirmation from the neonatal about its intended use.

Domperidone is an antisickness drug, so they didnt want to give me it because I wasnt using it for the intended reason it is made for.

Luckily they eventually gave in and it really made a big difference!

What made it more frustrating is that months later LO was given it right away for her reflux, barely a question asked  :dohh:

You can buy it, but its very expensive!!!!!!!

Great for a hangover too ;)

I don't want to take it for the same reason. But I'm feeling so depressed about giving up breastfeeding. I'm just not producing enough milk.

It makes me so sad and angry that there are so many women who CHOOSE not to breastfeed and it's supposed to be a natural thing and yet it's been SOOOO difficult for me. I'm asking to be referred to an endocrinologist tomorrow at the doctors and maybe that will help?

DOMPERIDONE (motilium) really helps!!

I am taking it, and thanks to it, my LO is exclusive BF.

When I started rebuilding my supply, the first thing I tried was Fenugreek and it was
good ( My kids told me I smelled like a pancake ;) )
But I couldn't have a full milk supply until I started taking Motilium. I take 3, 3 times a day, that means 90 mg each day.

I got it from the farmacy IN HOUSE, from New Zealand, and It took like 10 days to arrive.

I strongly recommend Motilium, but I think you have to continue taking it if your baby is older, not with a young baby.

I didn't have side effects at all. GOOD LUCK!!!

I asked my doctor for it when I tried relactation, he had no idea it was used for that :dohh: but is very good and gave me a load anyway. It made my stomach feel a bit funny, I felt hungry more often than I usually would. Nothing bad though. Didn't help with my supply as I never produced any milk in the first place so I think it was a bit much to ask really. I took 2 tabs 3 times a day for about a month, if not a bit longer, and was pumping all day and night too.

Red poppy I'm sure you've heard this before but try not to be sad and angry about it, there is a small percentage of women who don't produce enough for their babies no matter what they do and you might be in that exclusive club and if you are there isn't much you can do about it. Try all the things you can to increase supply but if it doesn't work with this baby move on. I was very upset about not being able to bf but time heals. I hope you can get enough milk for your baby. I'll keep my fingers crossed!

Hi Redpoppy!!

Don't forget that any ounce of BM you give to your baby, is going to be great for her, so you also have the option of combined feeding.

I think you should try Motilium for a month, to see if it works for you, then you will feel happy that you tried EVERYTHING ;)

I stopped BF when my baby was 1 month old, so I don't think my supply was well established, and now I have a full supply, even has been increasing more lately as my baby is six months now and she drink more and more now everyday. :)

I'm taking 20mg of domperidone, 3 capsules of Fenugreek and 3 capsules of Blessed Thistle all 3 times a day, because i'm trying to induce lactation for my surrogate baby.

I've had the occasional headache but not significant plus raging heartburn, though I think it's the fenugreek that's causing that tbh.

I'm also pumping 10 minutes every 2 hours plus once through the night. No milk yet, but have been told I won't get a proper let down until baby starts to suckle after she's born.

My GP has been fantastic and gives me it on prescription because the on line pharmacies in UK aren't licensed to supply it for any other reason than acid reflux, and I in my naivety told them the real reason I needed it lol.

I was given a prescription to take me right up to a week after the birth which I got for the prescription charge of £5. I was also told that if I'm still having trouble after baby's born I can go to the breastfeeding clininc at our local hospital and can get a prescription to be filled from the hospital pharmacy - they're very big on breastfeeding in our area, which is great for me because I'm desperate to do it.

I've also bought a couple of Medela SNS feeding supplementers so baby will actually get some nourishment when I'm trying to breastfeed in the first few weeks but hoping that eventually I will be able to stop with the supplementer. At the end of the day breastfeeding isn't all about breastmilk - and especially with me not being pregnant and delivering myself I want to do all I can to promote bonding between me and the baby.

They say that as soon as you start baby on solids you can get rid of the supplementer/formula because by then there will be enough breastmilk if there's additional nutrition from solids too.

I'd definitely give it a go hun - got to be worth it.

I think I'll leave the domperidome. I understand it's not a very strong drug but I don't like putting things like that in my system. I am currently combined feeding and just use the formula or top ups but that means baby gets less time to suckle which means, although I do let her suckle a few times a day and do skin to skin a few times, my supply isn't likely to increase in leaps and bounds.

She's putting on weight now so I'm happier.
