Lucas is 7 and a half months and I am starting to think about weaning him from bottle to cup with his milk, slowly.

He is managing to use a sippy cup for water with his meals. I was thinking how's best to do with the milk though as I can see him being quite unhappy with a hard beaker spout compared to a lovely soft bottle teat.

I have been doing a little research and have ordered a tommee tippee explora cup with handles to try and give him a part of one of his milk feeds in to see how he takes to it.

Anyone else considering doing this yet or started it? How's it going if so? What cup are you using etc etc? Any tips much appreciated. x

I've been trying for the past few days, but Omar says "yuk" & refuses to take formula from a sippy cup although he takes water frm it. If ur LO is ok with takng formula frm his sippy, go for it. It's easier to wean him off the bottle when he's older. I'm also starting with the afternoon bottle. Any sippy cup ur LO likes would do. Good luck xx

I wouldn't bother at that age, it's more important that they drink the milk than what is is drunk out of. Ruby refused milk out of a cup until 14 months, now she will drink milk out of any cup at all.

Hi, I weaned Alyssa off of her bedtime bottle a month ago and yesterday from her morning bottle. For her i found the tommiee tippee explora cup with the handles great then moved on to the one without handles a couple of weeks ago and theres been no fuss. Luckily i havent had a problem with is, as she is on a low milk intake she takes more from the cup than the bottle and definately prefers it. If you want to wean your LO now, give it a try, if they dont take to it at 1st maybe try in a couple of weeks again. Hope it goes well for you x

I started Charlotte with this yesterday, with the same cup but am getting nowhere! I've been trying to get her to drink water for ages but she just spits it out! Thought I might have more luck if there's milk in there but no! Good luck - let me know how you get on, and if you've got any tips for getting her to drink from a cup! xx

Thanks mummytobe. I tried with the afternoon bottle yesterday switching his milk into the tommee tippee explora but he didnt take to it at all. It is hard to drink from though as you have to clamp your mouth hard around it dont you to get anything to come out? I struggled! lol. I will try again next week I think.

Louise, I can get Lucas to drink water from his sippy cup and he drinks from it himself now no problems but he's having none of it with regard to milk in a different cup, only tried the once though. i tried the explora as it is more spouted like his bottle and no, then put in his sippy cup and no again. Oh well, no major rush I guess. He still wont have food before his milk either. He is very spirited! lol.

My boy is a year old and has been drinking from a cup since he was 7 months old. I struggled to get him to use a regular sippy cup so bought a 'nuby straw cup'.
I read about these cups in an article about kids with speech problems and apparently cups with straws help prevent that..... I dont know how true this is though.

oohh good thread the boys have water from sippy cups but I bought doidy cups too - not tried them yet. Tommee tippee sippys crashed and burned for us but boots specials at £1.50 went down a treat - bizarre!
