Anyone with a 9-10wk old baby that wont take anymore than 3oz at a time?

Lucas is almost 10 weeks and weighs 10lb 2. Used to take 27 ounces a day a lot of the time, now I am lucky if he makes it to 20. He should be having 25 a day ideally. He only takes 3 oz at a time, 4 if lucky. Also I have noticed that when giving him the bottle I need him to take all of it in the first go because as soon as he comes off to be winded he very rarely takes the bottle again even though he burps really well. He has tommee tippee bottles and is on SMA.

Tried an Avent bottle before and he seemed even worse on it!

Have you tried upping the teat size?, i had to do this because Myles was finding it so hard and tiring he would just give up and he was only 3 weeks old. This is what the health visitor recommended anyway.

I did try yes and hes been a bit on and off with it, sometimes seeming ok, and the other times spluttering and choking so have kept to the size one for now. HV said ideally he should be having five 5oz bottles a day. I really wish he could do this

i wouldnt worry too much about what the Hv says tbh, every baby that age will not be taking 5 x 5oz a day - they are all different

i would try bigger teats again in a few days, we had a similar situ with Lana and it was only a matter of days and she was able to manage them

she also sometimes refuses the bottle after winding, she is on 7oz now and i only stop to wind her her at 3.5oz now - she is managing fine with that now she is slightly older x

Megan was born 3 weeks early and was never at the same bottle sizes as other babies born at the same time. Her tummy was just smaller. At 9 weeks she weighed 10 lbs & she was drinking 3-4 oz every 3-4 hrs with a 6 hr stretch at night. Dr. said this was less than most 2mo olds were eating at a sitting. 1 week later she had a growth spurt and then started drinking 4-6oz every 3-4hrs.

At thia age Omar was taking 3-4 oz per bottle. He used to take between 20-24 oz through out the day. Now he takes 28 oz. Today he was a bit sicky & only managed 22oz. He's a big baby & was 13 lbs at 8 wks. Now he's 17lbs. As long as ur LO is happy & adding weight u dont need to worry. As for wind u can give Dr. Brown bottles a try. We were using TT bottles but switched to Dr. Brown 3 wks back & really helpt with the wind xx

Thanks everyone. He did a lot better yesterday, took 23 ounces so feel a lot better, perhaps he just been a bit off colour. Will just have to keep an eye on him and see how things go. Then again though this morning he has only had 2 and a half ounces. Reassuring that other people have had the same issues, maybe it is just his tummy playing catch up with him being premature like you say Daisybee xx

Thats good Lucas upped his intake - it will go up and down - it does with us!

I was a bit worried couple weeks ago- my Anna was the same - only taking about 20oz - it was because she dropped a night feed but was not making up for it - she used to take around 25oz a day. HV said dont worry- as long as she is giving wet nappies, alert as usual and gaining weight.

This week she has got it back up to 25oz.

I make up 5 oz bottles for Anna and she will finish them off pretty much.

She is still on size 1 TT teats - I have tried several times on size 2 (dont know why I tried the size 2 as she has never had any problems on size 1!!! Think it was just cos I hear lots folk saying to move up a teat size!!)

Anna will finish a 5 oz bottle with stopping for winding in about 20mins

I cant wait for Lucas to do that, he has only finished about 3 5 oz bottles before. Lucas is the same on size 1 and 2 teats it seems, just seems to splutter a bit on a size 2 if hes feeling too tired. x

At 9 weeks Megan had never drank a 5 oz bottle - so I was surprised when she all of a sudden drank a 6 oz bottle!

At the hospital I was told not to expect Megan to have 2 oz at a time til her due date & it seems to me that she was always 2-3 weeks behind as far as eating so to me it made sense that she was only having 3-4oz at 9 weeks.

We are just upping teats now as she has gone back down to drinking 4oz of her bottle & it was taking her quite a long time and she seemed to be getting frusterated. I didnt catch on very quick to what was wrong with her..... she is now trying to learn to use med. teats vs. slow flow which is quite an adjustment for her.

Mine take 120ml (4oz) every three hours - I am just trying to get them to take 5oz at their 10pm feed and reduce the night feeds to 2oz as most nights they are waking twice for feeding (well to be honest they tag team it and wake every other night for feeding but wake the other so I end up feeding both lol)

Have you tried the TT vari flow - they are a godsend for me as Sam feeds ahead of fynn and this means I dont have to get two teat sizes.

Lennon has never taken more than 4oz at a time (normally 3oz) but then he is a little baby.
Try not to worry too much hon,babies normally will drink as much as they need xxx

all babies vary x my lil princess will be 10 wks this sunday and she's been on 7oz of cow & gate 2 for last 4 wks x she has 6 bottles through the day and sleeps from 10pm until 6am in her own cot. she weighs 14lb 1oz :0) my lil chunk

just for the record my princess was born induced at 37 wks weighing 7lb 2oz and my cousins baby was 9 days over weighing 9lb 7oz

Alexa mostly takes 3oz a feed during the day, and usually 2oz for her first 2 feeds in the morning. sometimes she'll take 4-5oz in the evening but she has no where near the amount 'recommended' for her age.
the HV says she's putting on weight, is bright and happy so just let her carry on the way she is.
