We all have aspirations regards to what kinda parents we want to be, but what kind of parents don't we want to be?

Heres my list so far... (unwittingly taught to me by my mother in most cases!)

1. I hope I won't forget what it's like to need to be a bit cool/individual when you're a teen, and will thus try and bite my tongue when the kids turn into punks or goths or somen other style I am not totally in love with.
2. I hope I won't forget to say sorry and admit my own failings, as I expect them to
3. I hope I won't embarass them too much in front of their friends!
4. I hope I won't pass on my own insecurities about my body
5. I hope I don't turn into my mother (I have instructed OH to shoot me should this ever happen) :winkwink:
6. I hope I won't be an overbearing mother or MIL when my kids have their own babie's!
7. I hope I won't forget to appreciate them every day, because they grow up so fast :(
8. I hope I won't forget to listen

Oh what a lovely thread!! I might have to print off your list & stock it on my fridge as a reminder as i agree with everything youve listed!!!!

The only other thing I will add to that list is I open im more open minded etc about sex than my mum - i want my daughter ( if i have one ) to be able to talk to me about sex & contraception & not be scared to like I was!! afterall theyre gona do it anyway eh??!!!

I hope my children dont act like I did when I was a teenager but more importantly I hope that if they do that I can handle it as well as my parents did... cos I was frigging evil from 13-16!!!!!!! xx

Hehe I should add this one to my list, I was a horrid teen as well! I used to think Harry Enfield's Kevin the teenager was a joke... oh how naive I was. I make myoldest daughter watch it sometimes, she has to laugh, especially the parts where his parents are all calm and he screams "STOP BLOODY SHOUTING AT ME!" we get that ALL the time from my eldest lol

lol to the comment above!!

I totally agree with everything on your list, i have said pretty much the same thing to OH! I think the more aware we are of it though, the less likely our fears will happen i.e turning into our mothers!!

Nice thread :flower:

I hope.....I dont parent my children ANYTHING like my parents!

I hope I'm not one of those flustered parents you see sticking a Greggs' sausage roll in their child's piehole just to shut them up on fraught shopping trips.

I also hope I'm not one of those fat mothers you see puffing and panting, chasing their LO around the park. I'm determined to start a weight loss/fitness drive once the baby's born, starting with plenty of long walks with the pushchair!

Nothing wrong with a Greggs sausage roll on a shopping trip, as a quick snack/treat! I hope I've never been refered to like that, I'm worried now

I think most Mums will say/do things their Mums did, dispite saying they hope they don't turn into their Mum when they have kids. So many times & thought "S**t I sound like my Mum" :haha:

Definitely ok now and again (I eat them myself - they've been a guilty pregnancy craving of mine), but where I live, you constantly see 6 month babies with their knees covered in pasty crumbs while their mothers chain smoke and swear over their heads. Hideous. Not that I'm judgemental you understand :nope:

I want to feed my kid healthy food, starting with my breast milk.
I want to not rely on the tv as a babysitter.
I want to always make time to read a few books to him a day.
I want to not use physical punishment.
I want to never use sarcasm to him, my parents thought they were funny and did it to me all the time.
I want to always at least listen to him.
I want to make sure he knows how to have fun playing outside, like I did.

i will never put anything before my children (like my parents did to me and my siblings)
i will never treat there girlfreinds/boyfreinds like they not good enough xx

Ahhh, well my children are 4 & 6 years old and they only discovered Greggs within the past year,so I definately don't fall into that category (and never will :haha:).

Children in pushchairs + junk food = no way!

I will teach my child to respect all forms of life. She will be an animal advocate from day one!:)

I will stand by my child through good and bad decisions she may make and help her learn from both.

I also hope to raise my child as open minded and nonjudgmental as my parents raised me. I can only hope I do half as good a job as my parents did. (Not that I think I am so great but I think they were/are awesome parents!)

I will teach my child to listen more than talk as I truly believe that is what most people lack nowadays in communicating with each other.

I hope that in years to come, if my son or daughter has a child, that I have done a good enough job that they think, 'I can't wait for Christmas/ to teach them to bake/ to take them to the zoo (or whatever) because I remember how wonderful my mum made it when I was a child'.
