Has anyone been told by their midwife they have to take aspirin from 12 weeks of pregnancy onwards (one a day right to the end) because they had pre eclampsia with baby number 1?

I've never heard of it before but my midwife has told me I need to. I'd rather not, as i don't like taking stuff (and i'm already taking tablets for hyperemesis as have been in and out of hospital) but if it's necessary i suppose i'll have to.

Thanks x x

I got given baby aspirin, but didn't take it. I opted instead for regular BP monitoring. My main concern is that ibuprofen makes my asthma bad, and I was apwarned aspirin can do similar.

Aspirin and ibuprofen are a bit different in how they work and what they do. There is a great amount of research available about the benefits of aspirin in pg if you have a history of preeclampsia. Maybe run a search and talk with your MW about it a little more so that you feel comfortable. I know it's helped many women before. :hugs:

I had severe preeclampsia in my first pregnancy. I took baby aspirin in my second pregnancy and I'm currently taking it now. I know the seriousness of preeclampsia and would do anything possible to avoid it again. You may not like taking it, but it's a small pill and can make a huge difference for you and your baby. Please don't ignore this piece of advice from your mid wife. Just to add I also monitor my bp, but monitoring it will not prevent problems associated with preeclampsia like iugr.

I too had severe pre e with my first..causing me to deliver by emergency c section at 31+3. My pre e was so severe that i was suffering from IUGR. She was only measuring 28 weeks at birth. Thankfully other then being small and a small stomach infection, she was born healthy as can be :cloud9: My doctor had me start taking baby aspirin as soon as this pregnancy was confirmed viable. She said she's seen alot of research that proves it really can make a huge difference. Pre eclampsia is very serious and I too will do whatever I can to help prevent it this time around.

Wow! Have never heard of this. But will be asking my ob! I was induced at 36 wks for severe preeclampsia as well. Never want to go through that again....

Yep, I am also on baby aspirin due to hx of Pre E and a blood clot. Like many others, I will do whatever it takes to give my baby the best chance. I don't want to deliver too early. I'm already only allowed to go to 36 weeks barring my bp behaves. I just ask that you educate yourself on it. Do some research and make an informed decision.

I had pre eclampsia with my 1st son but with the other 2 I was fine & my bp stayed at my normal rate throughout (I have a low bp all the time) with them 2 aspirin wasn't suggested but I don't think they offered it like they do now but this time my midwife has said I'll probably have to have it which I don't understand, all my kids have the same dad & out of my 3 previous pregnancies it only affected my 1st which it's most likely to affect, I really don't want to take them unless it's really necessary, I think I'll be speaking to my consultant about it x

I'm on it now with this baby and feel great this time around. I suffered terrible migraines due to bp with my first. Nothing this time around

I had preeclempsia with my last baby, I was induced with him at 35 weeks and he weighed 4 pounds 11 ounces. When I was at my prenantal specialist appt at 15 weeks the doc told me to start taking 81mg baby aspirin. I have high blood pressure, so am taking meds for it, and he wanted me to take the aspirin in addition. I'm not sure why, I didn't ask the doc the reasoning behind it, but I'll do anything for my baby, even if it causes me discomfort in any way. If the doctor says so, then I don't think it'd be a good idea to disagree.

Im on it. My pre e developed into full eclampsia with my first, minutes after delivery i was having seizures and rushed to hdu for a week. It also caused a placental abruption, its really not worth not taking. 30 seconds out of your day can literally save both your lives.

I was high risk of pre eclampsia with my second and had to take aspirin honestly I would just take it hun it's worth it as there's a lot of evidence to suggest it helps

I had blood pressure problems in first pregnancy, although nothing serious I had a small baby. Second pregnancy they prescribed me 75mg of aspirin to take daily, I was also nervous about taking it but like others have said, it's not worth not taking it. I will do whatever it takes for my baby to be born safely. My second baby was born IUGR, but my blood pressure was better in that pregnancy that the first and even though I still had growth problems I often stop and wonder what would have happened if I hadn't taken the aspirin at all? Would she have been too small to make it? Would my placenta have failed if I hadn't of taken it? It could well be the reason she was born healthy if not on the smaller side. This time without a question I've started taking aspirin again from 12 weeks, and even though a scan did show I have blood flow problems with the placenta I'm 100% satisfied knowing that the aspirin will help.
