Hi Ladies
I hope you are all well.

I wondered if you any of you had this happen in your first pregnancy and if you knew what the likelihood of it happening again was?

I had my son 3 years ago and am due in January next year I have a consultants appointment on Thursday to discuss options but would like some advice where possible!

After 36 hours of contractions and only getting to 9 1/2 cm they finally admitted defeat and had to have an emergency c section as would have been too knackered to push. After they performed the section and closed me I bled out and lost 2 litres of blood (since reading up on it I understand that is quite a lot?!) didn't realise the significance of it all as was knackered at the time!!!

My husband is concerned and rightly so after being told they didn't know whether I would make it or not, about going for a natural birth and the same thing happening again. He is all for an elective. I will obviously go with the consultants advice as they know but I guess am concerned if it went wrong again I would hate to put my family in danger if that makes sense?

Am i over reacting?

Thanks for reading x

Of course you are not overreacting and I understand your fears. I had a secondary post partum hemmorhage with my first daughter after a caesarean section. It was 2 weeks later and I lost somewhere between 1.5-2 L. Not sure exactly they didn't tell me, but it was a lot and I underwent D & C, antibiotics and hospitalisation. I just missed getting a blood transfusion, but was weak afterwards for a while and needed to take high doses of iron supplement. This time I had a vbac and had retained placenta and managed to have a primary post partum hemmorhage despite opting for active delivery of the placenta (the shot!). I lost 1.4L this time (doctors told me this time) and I didn't feel as bad as the first time, but was still borderline as to whether I received a transfusion or not. I seemed to recover a bit better this time and haemoglobin levels were 89 this time (it was 84 the first time) and managed to avoid a transfusion again. It does make me nervous about having a third. The obstetrician said I could try if i wanted it and they know my history and can manage it, but I will be sitting down for some serious discussions prior to this to make sure I understand fully before making my decision as I have 2 other children to consider now. A PPH is not normal, but also not rare. I would aim for a hospital birth and make sure you see a specialist and ask all the questions you need to.

Sounds like you had a tough time too :( Thank you for your comments though. I had the consultant who advised vbac and that as soon as I go into labour I need to be admitted and would see how I was progressing after 12 hours if not going the way they like then they will go for c section I think. so like you said they know your history and will be on the ball. I understand what you mean about having a third though think I am definitely stopping after this one two is enough!! I always wanted 3 but after looking after 3 children under 4 for a day put me off lol!!
