Avatar pic?!

Please take pity and help me lol, I'm sure my OH would know how to do this when he gets in from work but I don't want to give him the pleasure of knowing that I don't know how to do it lol, so please can someone tell me how to add my own avatar pic? I've got scan photo added onto photobucket but can't seem to get it to be accepted onto the forum thing here - it keeps saying invalid file or invalid URL... ANY ideas?! x
