Babies born in the summer...what should they wear IN the hospital, and going home?

I know that hospitals are kept fairly cool with air conditioning. However, I'm due in June, and live in New England...it could be 70 degrees or 95 degrees when we're bringing him home.

Should I have long-sleeved things for him to wear while in the hospital, since the hospitals aren't super warm? And as for going home...I know babies are supposed to wear one layer more than you would. So if it's 80 degrees and I'm very warm and wearing a Tshirt and light jeans, would I put long sleeves on the baby? Just a onesie? Or a onesie AND an outfit over it?

For someone who has worked with children and infants, I'm finding I'm absolutely clueless about some things. O_O

You know, I was wondering the same thing. My gut tells me that if they are actually in the 90 degree heat then a short sleeved onesie will be just fine. If they are in AC, then they need a little more- like a onsie with legs and arms. If it was cold AC, I'd put a little sweater on with that because new borns don't regulate their own body heat. Again, this is just my own opinion, based on no experience, what so ever :winkwink:

i would say

Long seleved sleepsuits with vest underneath thin hat and blanket

and coming home again i would say something with layers as you always take things off him or put them on!

I think personally mat wards are quite chilly and they do like you to put a hat on baby and then to see if there too hot or too cold you feel the back of there neck if i remember rightly!

xx

I've been buying layette sets with both long- and short-sleeve cotton onesies. I figure I'll just bring one of each along with some little leggings and a cardigan and then we'll play it by ear from there

My son was born in may 2010 an it was BOILIN in and out the hospital but we were still advised to put him in a vest, babygrow (onesie),hat, mittens in hosp them comin home he had a little cardigan and a blanket in his car seat...he was perfect temp so i think take a cardigan and u can gage the temp yourself at the time...cx

The hospitals here are really warm. not sure yet what to put on baby its ages away

I don't know about US maternity wards, but in the UK they're BOILING! When my SIL was in having her baby it was about 30 degrees (celcius) and all the babies were sweating even just in their nappies. Seemed bizzare to be so hot, but the hospital wouldn't turn the heat down.

A onesie...but bring socks, hat and blanket.... It's easier to add layers rather than change outfits if the baby is overheating...

Sounds sane. I figure to bring 2 sleeveless vests, 2 onesies, and a hat in each of newborn and 0-3 month sizes, and a blanket for swaddling/car seat. If the hospital stay is longer, OH can pick up more stuff from home. It's Scotland. Even in June, it's not going to be overheating type weather.

I thought you're supposed to dress newborns in an extra layer than you would have because they can't regulate their body heat straight away. Thats why maternity wards in the UK are so hot and they still recommend you to put your LO in a vest/sleepsuit/hat etc. We find it too hot but for babies its a perfect temperature after coming from a nice warm body out to the big cold(ish) world!

When my MW checked on me a week or so after my LO was born, even though it was baking hot weather and the house was warm she told me off for not having enough clothes on him, i just assumed he would be as warm as i was!

I think layers are a good idea. As someone else has said in the UK maternity wards are always boiling hot.

But some of it also depends on your baby, my son was born in Feb so it was freezing outside but the ward was unbearably hot. The midwives kept putting more and more blankets on him and even though we were only there for a few hours after he was born by the time we got home he was covered in heat rash!

hat, longsleave and a thing blanket. we live in Florida and it will be between 90 -105 ... but houses and cars are really cold

In the us you don't need clothes for baby in the hospital... Only for going home. Make sure you take into consideration air conditioning... In your car and house!

i am in new england too (Boston) and my baby is due July 21. i was actually thinking the same thing as you- you are supposed to bundle up a newborn, right? i am thinking a short sleeve bodysuit and a light cotton onsie on top, and a light hat. and i can take some blankets with me in case its windy or something i can always put more blankets on him or her ;)

Same thing as Stellababy said :) I'm slightly south of Boston and due the first week or two of July.

Look at all us Boston gals coming out of the woodwork. :)
I know when I've visited friends in the hospital, their babies have been wearing clothing that they, the parents, brought in. However, they had had c sections, so they were in the hospital about 4 days. A normal, vaginal delivery with no complications usually means you go home, what, the next day?
Anyway, good to know. I know it's early, but I found a really sweet outfit in the Babies R Us "boutique" on deep clearance and bought it, size newborn, thinking that it could be a going home outfit. however, it's completely sleeveless and legless, like mini overalls that have elastic in the leg holes. I suppose that could be all right as long as we keep blankets. But maybe I should look for something else.

Good to know :) I'm in south florida and it's stll nearly 80 degrees and by april we will well into the 95's.. I picked up some long sleeve onesies just in case!

which hospital are you Boston ladies having your babies? it seemed like the hospital provided everything i needed when i had my daughter last year, i hardly used anything i brought in my suitcase! lol

I'm not sure about in the US, but here they say as a rule of thumb, baby should wear one more layer than you. So if you are wearing a pair of PJs or a nightie, baby should wear a babygrow/sleepsuit/think you call it a onsie? with a short sleeved vest underneath. Holly was born in August and the Maternity ward was absolutely roasting! The midwife said that they keep it like that for the babies, as they need to be warm when they are first born (I guess it is very warm in the womb!!). She said a hat wasn't necessary indoors, but good for going outside when you go home. I also put a little cardi on Holly when we went home.
