I want to put my 16 month old in a carrier as she is just a nightmare to take anywhere, she just screams hysterically wanting to b held. She hates the pushchair. Do u have any suggestions? I have 3 kids, and I've never tried any so no idea! I'm in the uk if that helps..

Could you get to a sling library/meet in your area? It would probably be the best place to start as there are so many different types. Do you want something with buckles or something with long ties?

I'd its buckles you are looking for then I love my connecta but it's not as padded as some carriers. It dies fold up really small though. A Tula has lots of padding and is particularly good if you want to carry on your back although personally I didn't like it. Some others to look into are manducas and ergos. Lots of fake ergos about though so if you buy one second hand be careful.

We use a Macpac. It's pretty heavy duty though (you could definitely take your kid up a mountain in it). If you're looking for something more indoor/everyday, how about a Hipseat? Though you still have to keep one hand on LO at all times ...

I agree, try a sling library or at least see if anyone you know has one before you try as they don't fit everyone the same. I used a mei tai for my DS at that age but I've heard good things about ergos and connectas. Facebook groups for slings are also useful.

I used an Ergo at that age and my son did great in it. We also use the Osprey Poco Plus. It's a hiking pack, but we use it when not hiking on occasion. The kid loves it, and he'll still fit in it for ages. But, it is sizeable, so if you're primarily looking for something for shopping or such, I'd go Tula or Ergo personally.

We have a Little Life back carrier. Our eldest was very happy in it at 16 months.

We got this one. My daughter seems comfy in it and doesn't mind being in there she's 18 months now we have used it 2 or 3 times.

Try a sling meet and see which one suits you best. At that age still I preferred a woven wrap, but we also have a Ergo which was great (others like Manduca, Tula, Connecta, Rose and Rebellion, etc. are also great and I know people who love theirs). As long as it's ergonomic and supports babies hips, not the Baby Bjorn style where they dangle down, and it's comfortable for you, it's a good fit. But there are so many that it's worth trying out a few different kinds if you can before you buy. We also have a Little Life hard structured carrier, which is great for if we are out walking all day. It's very heavy (I can't carry it for any length of time, but my husband loves it). But I can still carry our almost 3 year old in both the Ergo and the woven wrap comfortably, so either style would be great for a 16 month old.

Thank u for all replies, I don't have a sling library near me, closest is 20 miles away, which with 3 kids and I don't yet drive, I can't get to one. I need one that is also easy to get baby in and out of easy on my own, if that helps?

I am going to have a look around the shops today, can't take baby as she will be a nightmare, but my friend is taking her baby almost same age so will try a few out with her lol. I never realised there were so many different ones!

I'm currently using a manduca which is brill, I've got a rose and rebellion too. Could someone drive you to the sling meet just the once? The one I go to doesn't mind older children and it's so handy trying them on!
You could give ring slings a go too, then she could sit on your hip and have a good look around while being close.
Edit. Baby bjorn (sp?) Have two carriers now that are ergonomic for hips, called one and we I think :-)

No I don't have anyone to drive me there, I don't have car seats for the kids either so just isn't doable. I'm learning to drive at the mo, been at test standard since August but they have cancelled my test twice! So not through lack of trying :/ anyway, I went to have a look, and they all killed my neck or back within minutes of having her in it! So back to square one. The ring sling sounds good though, I'll look into that one thanks :)

Don't give up, the right sling won't hurt your back, have a look in mother are for an ergo, someone in a fb site said they got one for £54 this week! Most of the carriers in the high street are the old baby born style which will really hurt your back, especially with a 16 month old! I tried one we were gifted when DS was four months and didn't last five mins.

If you want to try before you buy it's a sling thing to postal rentals.

I love my Tula; still wearing my 2 1/2 year old/25 lb daughter just fine in it. I'm not a fan of ring slings or wraps, but I never get the same "secure" feeling with them that I get with my soft structured carrier. It's easy for me to get her in and out of in either a front or back carry, and so durable! I've even done 5k races wearing her in it, and it doesn't even feel like I have a toddler on my back. :)
