Just read an article in The Sun about an 11month old who died as the baby was only fed on mother's breast milk and weighed only 12lbs!! The parents were vegan. This is all the article said and that they lived in France!

What are your views on this?

There is a lot more to it than that. A baby can live just fine off mother's milk at 11 months (yes solids are ideal after 6 months) - 12lbs? At 11 months? Clearly there is some failure to thrive problems and a system failure to protect this baby.

Have read this article and apparently this baby was having health problems at 9 months which they refused to treat medically (using their own beliefs instead) - a 9 month old can easily subsist just fine on mother's milk so there's a lot more to it.

Also, vegan diets can be incredibly healthy. In fact as I type this, I am drinking a vegan smoothie with-4 cups spinach, bunch of kale, strawberries, banana, flax oil, protein powder. That's a lot more vitamins than the average person eats in an entire day let alone one meal. My boy is right now eating a vegan lunch (sweet potatos, peas, kiwi, strawberry) at 10 months... there's a lot more to this.

theres more to it the baby died from not having enough vitamins

the miother was a vegan and didnt take any vitamin supliments and didnt belive in anything but natural medicine the baby was ill with phuemonia and they refused to take it to hospital

they are both looking at life sentences x

There has to be more to it then just that .. can you post the article?

I find it difficult to really understand what could have happened without more details but I have heard of babies surviving and thriving perfectly off breast milk alone for much longer than we're advised. Unfortunately I think there must have been a lot more underlying issues. Very sad though  xx

I agree. There has to be more to this story.
While solids can be introduced after 6 months (and some people say even earlier than that), an infants main source of nutrition still comes from either breastmilk, or formula for the first year. A healthy infant should not have had health concerns from a diet of solely BM at 11 months.

Have you read this in another newspaper as it was only a small article I caught in the Sun at my nan's house (dont usually read that paper). It seems you know more about it as the article I read was very limited in the onfo it provided? xx

Very sad and outrageous. I understand that many have reservations about modern medicine and prefer traditional methods but unfortunately, like many of us learned in labour, the reality is that a sizeable percentage of infants and children died before the age of 5 back before modern medicine. Their refusal to seek modern treatment for this poor baby led to her death. They are negligent.

I know I thought that babies could live off mothers breastmilk and was wondering if anybody knew more on this story, if anybody has a more informative article on this please post!! x

they obviously didnt seek medical help, and i havent even looked at the article in question, but if my baby was only weighing 12lbs even now at 8 months old id be asking his gp whats going wrong.

infact when he was 4 months old he started loosing weight, i didnt have a good enough milk supply, i combination fed for a month before switching to ff and weaning.

i would not let my child waste away before my eyes just because *i* had dreams of breastfeeding him till a year old.

this is a longer article.
Not read it all at the moment, but surely they had to be underlying issues
It is so sad :nope:

here is the article about it from the Guardian.

I am just wondering what the health system is like in France, if they have HV, etc. Obviously here in the UK we can go to HV advice clinics and get baby weighed and advice but I presume maybe they have them but the parents didn't go along. I really hope it is a case of uneducated parents and not neglect, hopefully it will raise awareness to other mums. Poor baby!

Thanks for the posted articles will read now!! xx

I really hate how a lot of articles are making it out to seem like breastfeeding or being vegan is what killed this baby. The baby had health issues and the parents chose not to do anything because they didn't believe in conventional doctors, or whatever they claimed their reasoning was. It was because of their neglect for their child's wellbeing that the baby died, not because of breastfeeding or being vegan.

I agree. They let their baby die just because they wanted to stick to their beliefs. They deserve the life sentence.
