Me and DH are trying to decide which baby monitor system we should buy. There's so much choice!

We originally thought we might opt for a monitor that has a mat you place under the mattress to detect movement, but have read that these mats aren't very reliable. So, for you mums that have used the mats, what do you think? Would you recommend we get one?

Also, is there any particular advantage in getting a monitor that has a video display? I mean, I know you can see baby, but the video display isn't going to tell you if they're still breathing if they look like they're asleep...

All advice welcome!

Thanks x

Hi, can only tell you what we decided.

I was torn over getting a movement sensor mat- and then had several people tell me they got one and all it did was frighten them half to death, going off at wrong time and they ended up tking it out. Also pointed out had it gone off for a genuine reason what would they have done exactly?
I didnt really consider a video one, like you said you cant really use it to see if baby is breathing but I rekon you would end up staring at it without meaning too instead of relaxing with OH on a evening for example.
Sooo we decided we wanted one that told us if the room was too hot/cold, that was very clear, had a night light and that we could set to play songs to LO from the room we are in - ie without having to go in and switch them on. We ended up with the BT one and it looks fab so far (no baby yet, but we have played mummies and daddies with it to test and it was good lol!!!!)

i registered for one that alerted you if the baby stopped moving/breathing for so many seconds but my grandma went to the store and asked which one was the best. she ended up getting one that is a video monitor (which i did not really want originally). after reading up on it i think i will like it because itll be nice if i wake up in the middle of the night to see if shes ok there is a screen right next to my bed and it zooms in far enough to see if the chest is rising. i havent hooked it up yet so i guess we'll see!!

What model did you get?

ive got a breathing one yes they do have false alarms sometimes (my little girl rolls herself right to the end of the cot and lays across ways so the monitor pad cant detect her as she goes out of range) BUT when she was 4 months old within the space of 2 weeks the alarm went off several times and when I woke and looked at her she wasnt breathing but with a nudge she would start again (mentioned to doctor said it was with her having cold and hasnt happened since)

Now to me I would rather put up with the odd false alarm and know that if the worst happened I would know within seconds and be able to get medical help than to wake up in the morning and it be too late ifykwim?

xx

its summer infant day and night or something like that from walmart

A friend of mine has the video kind, and after seeing hers I would not have anything else. Her baby is old enough to stand in the crib, and we watched her baby silently stand up in her crib. Not a peep was heard. It's portable so she carries it all over the house while baby sleeps.

We got our video monitor and it even hooks to the TV, lmao. DH had fun with that...

when i went home for my lunch break we hooked ours up just out of curiosity after reading this thread and i love the video one we have!!! our video part isnt portable which would be nice but the screen is big on the parent monitor that is next to the bed which is great so i dont have to try to look at a tiny screen to see whats going on in there

My brother has just bought us this one, weve had a little play on it and were SO impressed with it.

It does loads of different things and i cant wait to use it!!!

I love my video monitor!! It was the best thing I ever purchased, and still use it with my three year old. It's color and you can see baby perfectly, plus you can turn the screen off and just use sound if you want to save battery when you carry it with you. Or just plug it in and keep the screen on and hang it on the wall/dresser etc. You can also plug it into your t.v. and watch the baby that way, although I never really used that feature much. Would never use any other.
