Im really unsure as to what to do here....For the prevention of SIDS they now recommend putting baby on their back but i was talking to my mum about this the other vday and she thinks its ridiculous ( she has had 6 of us) and put all of us on our tummys?

She said on their back they can choke on their own vomit and on their bellies they are strong enough to life their heads and turn sideways if they end up face down

I had planned on the back but now im not so sure.

What is everyone else planning to do or have already done bwith their LO's. Im so confused

i'm going to follow the SIDS guidelines and lie baby on his back. I just wouldn't feel comfortable risking baby suffocating by lying on his stomach and there is greater risk of him putting his head face down and suffocating than there is of him choking on his vomit IMO x

I'll be putting hm on his back and if it's anything like the first time then I'll be sleeping with one eye open anyway and not actually sleeping at all.

yeh well im inclined to follow the SIDS guidelines too as they have done the research but my mum made me worry a bit

The risk of SIDs is higher than the risk of choking on their own vomit, ill be putting bubs to sleep on her back xxx

But lets face it, its not as if any of us will be in such a deep sleep that we'd miss something going on with our bubs is it?

^ It happens unfortunately, you have to sleep sometime x

definitely back, haven't been told by anyone anything different

Back, I couldn't imagine putting a baby on it's front, seems weird to me (although I know that is what used to be done). Must be sore for the first few days whilst they have the clamp on their cord stump, imagine lying on that all night owww.

back deffo :)
it just seems the more sensible choice
i wouldn't want to increase the risk of SIDS xx

Back too, never known it any other way (except when I was little, I went on stomach too) As far as I know babies automatic reflex if they vomit is to move their head to the side.

I will put baby to sleep whichever he will sleep!! With my DS he would NOT sleep more than 15-20 minutes if he was on his back, however when I put him on his stomach then he would sleep about 2 -2.5 hours!

Back for sure!

My parents said the same thing to me, then right after told me they used to smoke heavily around me and fed my sister rice cereal at 9 days old! Things change and they don't know any different because they are no longer taking care of babies :)

Thanks for the opinions ladies, i will be sticking to the SIDS guidelines, as much as my mum may not like it lol.....they say back for a reason!!

i'll be going for back as well!!
my mum keeps disagreein with a lot of things i've been advised nd things i plan on doin... but tough sh*t this is my child!
xx

At my prenatal classes, the nurse said that they used to recommend placing the baby on their tummy to sleep...once they changed it to their back, the SIDS rate dropped dramatically. She said that most babies have a natural tendency to sleep with their head kind of to the side, so there really isn't a risk of them choking on their own vomit. Even if the baby doesn't sleep with their head to the side, it sounds a lot safer for them to be on their back!

i got the same lecture from my parents, they had 7 kids altogether and we all slept on our tummies.

my daughter slept only on her back for the first 4months. After that, on back, front and side.

Because she slept on her back, she wasn't used to pushing herself up with her arms and they weren't strong enough to do so anyway. I don't know if this would be different if she had started off sleeping on her tummy!
