Hi ladies! I am a little lost on what to get for our baby to sleep in, am i meant to get him a bassinet? Or is a cradle ok for a new born? Is a cradle too big for a new born? What about a cot when do they sleep in a cot??

Im a little lost with this and dont know which direction to go in! The hubby is wanting to make our baby's cradle and/or cot.... if he just made the cot is that ok for a new born?

Sorry if i sound like a bimbo! This is our first child and I also don't want to make any unnecessary expenses or get the hubby to make something that we really don't need. I need some direction!

Thanks so much for any advice given :)

*Bump*

I don't want this to sink away - i really need peoples suggestions... please! :)

We have a crib for the baby when it is first born which will do it until it can pull itself up then we will put it into the cot we also have.

I was a bit clueless too, I had to ask my friend who has 2 kids already.

Don't worry, I'm sure we'll figure it out! Xx

We just went out and bought a cot, from what ive been told bassinets are a bit of a waste as they grow out of them too quickly! Im not too sure what the difference between a cot and crib are but pretty much everyone i know got a cot straight away, they may be more expensive in the beginning but alot of them last well into the toddler years so its worth spending that bit extra at the beginning.
This is our first so we just went with advice of family and friends that have gone through this before, my closest girlfriend just had a premmy baby boy and ahd to go out and buy a bassinet as the poor little man was lost in a big cot but they are the only ones i know that have a bassinet.

I hope that helps a bit! :)

We are getting a moses basket for when its titchy and sleeping in our room for first few weeks but have a cot bed rather than just a cot so that we can use it for years as baby gets older. It will nap during the day in the cot bed so it gets used to it.

We're going to get an Amby Hammock for when baby is little:
https://www.ambyhammock.co.uk/

Then cot whenever s/he gets too big for the Amby.

They are quite expensive but it was the one thing I really wanted to get for the baby, they are helpful for colic and reflux too. They sell for quite good amounts on ebay so we should be able to make back a decent amount after.

We were initially going to go with a Moses basket for the first few months, but we ended going with a cradle (solid wood that rocks and can fit next to the bed in the early days when I'm getting used to nursing him). Another reason we went with the cradle is that we have 2 huge dogs that would constantly have their faces in the basket, this way they can look at the baby through the cradle rungs without disturbing him. We have a full sized crib for when he's a little older and I feel more comfortable having him out of arms length.

Never heard of the hammok before, but cannot imagine it would be good for the back and just as dangerous as sleeping I. The carseat. okay I am in the us and confused with a cot or cot bed ... we will have its room set up with a crib, but it will sleep in our room the maybe first 6-8 weeks, depending when it sleeps through the night. We switched lo at 3 weeks, she woke up Ines a night from day one, and after 3 weeks she fell asleep i. Her romm and then came into ours in her basinet after her feeding. I nursed in my rocker in her room, to not wake up my husband. At 2 weeks she was used to bottle and breat, and i pu per, so oh took over weekends.
We have a pack and play for when we went to family

For my other three kids we kept them in a bassinet in our room till they mostly sleep through the night. Then we put them in their crib (in their room) once only get up once or so a night. This has worked so far since our babies have started sleeping through the night before they outgrew the bassinet. I don't know what a cot is, sorry. Moses baskets are a good idea also, but they can't stay in them for long. With this baby I plan on using a pack and play with a built in bassinet in my room, since I got rid of my full sized bassinet and don't want to buy a new one.

Just looked at that hammock...looks kinda dangerous if you ask me. It doesn't look like it has very good air flow (to help prevent SIDS).

These are the UK uses of the terms, USA/Canada/RoW might be different.

Moses basket = bassinet = small lined wicker basket, often with a stand to keep it at bed level. Ok till baby grows out of it or is pulling themselves up to sit on their own, depends on size and growth rate, anywhere from 6 weeks to 6 months, generally 3-ish months. Great if your bedroom is too small for a crib or cot.

Crib = 18"x40" (50x104cm), small version of a cot, sometimes on rockers or with a gliding action. Can be used with rocking/gliding action until baby is pulling themselves up by the bars, then need to be locked in place for safety. Babies grow out of these anywhere from 4-9 months.

Cot = 24"x48" (66x126cm), what you usually think of as a place for older babies to sleep. Different mattress heights as baby grows and starts to stand up, some have drop sides (still sold in the UK but I understand banned in Canada, USA due to safety issues). Can be used from birth to ~2 years, some have removable sides to make them usable for longer after toddler is ready to get in and out on their own.

Cot bed = 30"x57" (76x145cm), a slightly larger version of a cot designed with removable sides, ends are generally solid. When the sides are removed, looks like a small regular bed, can be used from birth to ~4/5 years depending on size.

I hope this is helpful! Personally we've spent a little extra up front on a cot bed and a high quality mattress to last us the first 4-ish years, and we're getting a Moses basket & stand secondhand from my boss so baby can stay in our (tiny) bedroom for the first few weeks/months.

I am getting a cot for night time and for the day a pram/ carry cot that's suitable for baby to sleep in too. As I am getting a carry cot I think a moses basket is a bit of a waste really.

We will have a bassinet to start out with, in our room. Once baby is sleeping through the nights, we will use the crib. Will also have a pack n play to be used at the grandparents houses

Whats the different between a carry cot and a moses basket? So many names and I get confused!! Is a carry cot the thing that comes with pram? If it is do these come with a stand? Id happily get this instead of a moses basket but wouldnt want to put it on the floor with baby in it (or have a pram in my bedroom). x

In answer to your question, a newborn can go straight into a cot, but many people like to have a smaller crib/moses basket in their own room for first few weeks (you could of course have a cot in your room to start). Also, just want to say that I love that your OH is making the cot! My Dad is a carpenter and we'll be inheriting the toddler beds that he made when me and my bro were little, which I think is such a personal touch!

Well ... I seem to be ending up with all 3! We're going to buy a cot bed for nursery but also due to be given a swinging crib, which OH had when he was a baby, which we're going to have in our room for first few weeks/months. As well as that, we've been offered a moses basket which we'll keep downstairs for when baby naps during the day. Not sure we really need that though as the pram we are planning to get also has a detachable carrycot which could be used for daytime naps, but figured as it's free we can always pop it in the loft if we aren't using it and it's in the way!

Yeah, a carrycot is what comes with some prams. Not sure that you can buy stands for them? Worth a google search though as I'd imagine they do sell them!

I don't want to hijack the thread with hammock discussions but just to say that the sides are mesh and the top and bottom are open so plenty of air flo. There have (as far as I can tell) been just 2 cases of SIDS in Amby's - in both cases the hammock wasn't used properly or there were other factors.

The baby's back isn't hunched when in the hammock (like a car seat), baby is just on a slight slope. I believe they use them in some hospitals for prem babies as it creates quite a womb like environment with the slight slope and movement.

Basically, just wanted to say I've done lots of research and am very happy with safety aspects .

Whilst you can put a newborn straight into a cot, they tend to feel better in smaller surroundings, as they are not used to having so much space....think furniture swaddling :winkwink:

We have a crib which we bought for the last bubba, and this will last until around 5 months, at which point baby will move into a cot, in his or her own bedroom. If it is another girl I will use the same cot as my 13 month old uses now, as she will be about 2yo by then, and will be moving to a big girl bed, but if not, I'll just buy another one as and when I need it

I think it's recommended that babies don't sleep at night in pram carrycots as the mattress is not right for longer sleeps - totally ok for naps and a couple hours out at the shops, though!! Please correct me if I'm wrong ...
