My sister is expecting in January. Because we've "been there and done that" I want to get her a truely amazing gift for her baby when it arrives. She's team yellow so I can't pre-purchase anything gender specific.

What was the best gift you were given when your baby was born?

I think ours was a jellytots monkey shaker, a baby record book and lots of super cute boy clothes.

A new hoover, loads of nappies, and a food shop! I think what I would have appreciated most this time would be a takeaway tea, a hamper of junk food treats, and possibly a really good series to watch during cluster feeds.

Homemade food for the freezer, coffee gift cards, supermarket delivery, takeaway. All would have been my favourite gifts.
Also my slings, I had no idea I would be so into baby wearing. A stretchy sling in first few months was a lifesaver.

In terms of something specifically for the baby, a voucher for a photo shoot, a homemade personalised blanket and instead of clothes we asked for books with an inscription saying why it was the givers favourite children's book to start his library. Also things we didn't know we'd need so many of like muslins.

I love keepsake gifts
When my son was born, girls from NCT group gifted him with personalised blanket and wooden star with the name and date on it.
For my girl i am getting similar star myself (can hang it on the door/wall), foot and hand clay kit, newborn or family photosession.

I personally would have loved a food hamper of some sort, maybe some champagne if she drinks, some pampering products like a good natural hand and food balm or other moisturiser or bath soaks, and a cute outfit (gender neutral would have been fine, we were team yellow and had loads of cute gender neutral stuff). Honestly, all the toys and things people got us didn't get too much use as they were for older babies and had long since fallen to the back of the cupboard before our daughter was old enough to appreciate them. But I would have loved some nice things just for us. When our friends had their baby, we sent them a hamper with some nice coffee beans and specialty tea, a few natural spa products for mum, and some natural bath things for their son. I think those sorts of things get used and appreciated a lot more.

Some great ideas!! I think a food basket will definitely feature!! A couple of homemade meals plus some junk food & a bottle of her favourite tipple.

Life savers for me was an assortment of dummy's, a bottle of infacol, a bottle of colief and some awesome coffee wrapped up in a little basket with a label saying open incase of emergencies!

It was a gift from another mummy and was a life saver in the early weeks when DS colic kicked in BIG time and I just wasn't prepared for it!

Just FYI UK ladies, you can get infacol on minor ailments for free ;)

I second the takeaway type stuff. We got SO much for the wee one that I had to take most of it back to swap for bigger sizes as I must have had about 50 newborn/0-3m onesies but nothing any bigger! I swapped pretty much all the clothes we got after she was born for bigger sizes, which was good as she was only in newborn for 2 weeks.

For us, we enjoyed a few alcoholic drinks, coffee, takeaways, new jammies, nappies (again she grew out size 1 really quickly and is in size 2) hand sanitiser (lifesaver lol!) my friend got me jokey bits like a bottle of laundry detergent and stain remover, a stress ball, a miniature of vodka hidden inside a mug (lol) which cheered me up as I felt horrible!
