I plan on going to one today just wanted to know what to expect as I'm very shy. Are these groups just a general place to for bf mothers to meet and share experiences or are they solely for people would are having an issue with bf. Is it some where that I can ask for my latch to be checked as I had a blocked duct over the weekend or do only Hvs do that. Ahhhh I'm so nervous lol stupid I know but I'm painfully shy and find meeting new people difficult without knowing at somepoint I'm going to have to get me boobies out :haha:

The one that I go to has a HV attend at least for some of the time to give professional advice. But generally it's somewhere for BF mothers to meet and support one another.

Mine is a mix between a coffee morning and where you can help and advice. We have trained supportworker who runs ours. Shes not a peer support, its her full time job so he knows her stuff.

At the ones I go to you can get support and advice from the Peer Supporters and can also have a chat and general support rfom the other BFing mummy's there. Some people only go when they have a problem, some people start going when they have a problem and then carry on going, and some people are problem free but just gon along to chat with other BFers.

I would have thought there will defeinately be a Peer Supporter there who will be able to check your latch.

I'm a Peer supporter and when I see a new face at Bfing support group I try and get to chat to the woman asap and usually open with something along the lines of "hows it going", and from what I've seen most others do similar.

i'm thinking of going to one too! i'm not shy though but not really sure about it? lol xx

I was reallly shy about going the first time too.

The thing is, that it's local mums, ordinary mums. Who are BFing. At least occassionally. Many supplement too. Often there's also a HCP, such as a MW or HV. Or a knowledgeable mum. I'd hope for a Breastfeeding Counsellor, but not all groups have one who attends.

Thanks ladies I went on the advise of hv to raise awareness was told the group was quiet. Hmmm wasn't expecting it to be just me and a breastfeeding counsellor. Still I enjoyed the chit chat and got some helpful tips to help reduce ds getting such bad trapped wind due to forceful let down and being a guzzle guts. Got My latch checked and it's just fine :happydance:

It was just the two of you? Quiet is an understatment lol There is allways 10+people at mine

baby bistro is more casual and run by peer supporters who can offer support but if it's outside our remit we'd signpost you to a baby cafe which is generally led by bf counsellors who can help with any issues. Don't feel worried about going to the 'wrong' one, you'll be more than welcome at both x

The one I go to is a very relaxed group with peer support workers who can help with latch/thrush/mastitis, etc. I went to help me get used to feeding in public and to get some advice and now go because I enjoy the company!
