Big baby??

I was told my baby is a little large and I don't have GD. I go back for a scan at 34 weeks but its to check her kidneys, though I am now very curious as to what her weight will be then. The doctor said to not make her a 10 pounds just be strict on diet less sugars and fats.

I was told at the 26w scan baby was big. 97 percentile. I have my regular OB and a specialist OB. Specialist said that babies can grown in spurts. So possibly the percentile will change. He said its best to be cautious tho and start eating differently. He said use the Atkins diet. I read up in GD myself. No sugar, no white bread, no bananas (high sugar who knew?) and limited potatoes. Any carb needs to be eaten with a protein. The main goal of the diet is protein and vegetables. Limit everything else. And excersize every day.

So I've been doing that. Back then they sent me for the gluclose test. I failed the 1 hour, passed the 3 hour.

Then I had a 28 week scan. Baby was now 92 percentile. Specialist said babies at 92% when born are between 8 and 9 lbs. He said I'm trending the right direction.

My OB sent me for another 3 hour and I passed that again. She is still concerned about size tho so she scheduled me for a Csection?? I made he put it a week after my due date. I think she's overly concerned personally...

The worry for GD babies is in later pregnancy some hormone does not let your body get rid of the sugar properly, so baby gets more. This makes baby add weight but specifically to the head and shoulders. Shoulders are the big concern during natural birth.

Specialist said many women can control it with diet and excersize.

So it could be GD, or growth spurt for you. I'm eating the GD way anyway since its healthier and they made me paranoid..

Oh see! I am slightly less worried about myself now because mine was 64th percentile. I would not consider a c section for an 8 or 9 pound baby unless they KNOW your pelvis is to tiny. Though that is just me I am terrified of c-sections and feel they are pushed to often these days. :flower:

Scout you know what... whatever this pregnancy throws at me I don't care so long as my baby is happy and healthy! Bring it on I say lol.

When is your test? When is your next scan?

I feel the same way! I was told I could never have kids and then turned 40 and got pregnant, lost the first 3 and now this one, apparently growing like a weed LOL. So yeah, whatever I have to go thru is totally worth it as long as baby is healthy.

My test is Thursday morning and he'll do a scan too. I see both a regular OB and a high risk consultant OB, so I've had tons of scans, but the high risk OB has much better equipment. I see him again in 4 weeks. I'll see my regular OB next week for the GD test and a scan and he'll see me every 2 weeks.

Will they deliver you early? Wondering if that is just a US thing with women over 40.

I'm not concerned with eating less fats, but less sugar will be hard given that fruit contains a lot of sugar and I'm obssessed with fruits. But threat of a 10lb baby may change my mind LOL I love big babies, but not that big..ouch :)

*sorry, I don't know how to do one reply with several quotes..

I will look into the Atkins diet. I don't eat white bread anyways...never been a big bread eater...but I love my bananas. I eat one everyday :(

what you said about the head has me concerned...when they were measuring her, her head measured at 31 weeks (almost 4 weeks ahead) and then all other measurements were 29w+some days. I guess I shouldn't worry until I know something, but I am concerned. My cousin is a nurse and the first thing she said was that she bets I have GD too. I mean, I know it's not the end of the world and many women deal with it and I will too if I need to, but still. I just want baby to be healthy.

C-section is something I'm hoping to avoid. I know I'll be delivered no later than 39 weeks already (due to age), but I really want to be induced. Does seem strange that she is already pushing for csection tho, but glad you put if off until a week after your due date. Hopefully, you'll go natural before then :)

thx ladies for all your feedback.:flower: over 40, first (and only) baby, and concerned about absolutely everything

Scout I had the same worries as you. I was also eating a banana, an orange and a big glass of OJ a day thinking I was doing good. But I was wrong. It's really not to bad cutting out that's stuff. I try limit to 1 fruit a day but I steer clear of bananas which are my favorite.

The head did not concern the Drs, it's the shoulders. Also, you can change the result by food choices. So it's not that once you have a big baby thru GD that's it. It's controllable. I told DH to bring me a chocolate shake and 2 hot dogs afterwards. lol

I would try not worry so much. Just read up on the diet of GD and make some small changes now. Even if you don't have GD it's still a good eating plan for pregnancy. There's lots of snacking so you won't go hungry! :)

You might not even have to be induced. Your body knows what to do.

At 20 weeks my baby was measuring two weeks ahead, but I had an ultrasound the same day and he was bang on for dates. It's not an exact science Hun ;) Don't put too much weight on it.

My Dr said he would rather a bigger baby then a smaller baby, for smaller means something could be off or wrong. So I guess that is good right?
