Birth

I was just talking to my mum about L + D and she was like, 'If they ask you if you want to feel baby's head, you say no.' she told me that when they asked her, she said no but the doctor still grabbed her hand and made her feel :haha: Then she had gooey stuff on her hand, and didnt know where to wipe it so just ended up wiping it on the bedsheets :haha:

Also, idk what my mum was like with my sister, but when she was in labour with me, she was being sick so much. My dad was actually running out of places to put the bowls (or whatever they're called) of sick because all the tables/windowsills were already full of them. So i hope to god im not like that. I hate being sick, i always cry :(

I also told her that im planning to not get an epidrual (i know sometimes plans change.) And she just scoffed and was like, "just wait and see.." :growlmad: It makes me so angry when people just expect you not to be able to have the determination to do what you want.

So what are your birth plans kind of like?
Mine is more or less, just OH in the room with me, and no pain releif. Although i am hoping to maybe having a birthing pool. But i definitely want to be at hopsital.

just me and OH in birth centre (is in a hospital though) on just gas+air but if it gets too much for me handle gonna have go downstairs and demand pethedine, want to be able to move around as much as possible until gets to pushing stage.

dont pay attention to what people say everyone birth is different if your determined do it without pain relief good for you! :)

at home with OH and Mom.. A birth pool and the shower. lots of moving around and as natural as I can be but I might have gas and air as a backup plan, if labour is really long or something.. mostly just at home!

The midwife made me feel Finn's head, like grabbed my hand and put it there. All I felt was moist hair. It was gross and I yanked my hand back as soon as I could. :haha:

I preferred touching him when I was fully out.

I'm hoping not to have any pain relief, like i said. But i know plans change and idk. I think i have a pretty high pain threshold, but obviously only time will tell. I'm keeping an open mind.

Olivia, i love the idea of a home birth, but i'm just a Paranoid Polly :dohh: I wanna be surrounded by doctors and hospital equipment and stuff.

I really want just me and OH to be there. My Mum asked to be there and i've felt awkward/bad saying no. I'm just not comfortable with that. I also want to stay at home as much as possible before going to the hospital. I plan on trying to go without pain relief, especially an epidural. I will obviously use it if I have to and think i'll have gas and air anyways. I really want a water birth. I also want to be out of the hospital asap. I have a fear of being away from OH, even just a night. It's just i've been with him 24/7 from so early on in our relationship. I know I need rest after giving birth and honestly don't think i'm gonna get that at the hospital

I have a couple of questions mostly for the Mummies.
1. After LO is out, they can place them on your chest so you're skin-to-skin, right? But how long can they lay there till they're taken to be cleaned up/checked and everything?

2. And how long does the cleaning up take?

3. How soon after birth do you get the chance to feed LO?

4. How long can you wait to go to hospital? I dont really want to just go to hospital as soon as my contractions are every few minutes. I dont want to spend hours of labour at hospital, when it'd be no different if i was at home. Like can you stay at home until your water breaks or something?

It may vary US/UK but I'll answer in case anyone else is wondering.

1) I was given skin to skin right away. He was probably there about 10 minutes.

2) Cleaning, getting the needed prints, etc, about 20 minutes? It was hard to gauge. I delivered the placenta and got stitched up during it.

3) As soon as I got him back after we were both taken care of I was encouraged to try to breastfeed.

4) My water broke and the urged me to go right away as they need to make sure there's nothing wrong, make sure it is water, etc. My water broke around 2:30pm and it was about 5pm I was admitted to my own room (got there around 4:30pm).

My mother is an OB so I feel safe at home with her there, I'm not sure if I would be so comfortable with a home birth if she wasn't though

Ahh, fair enough. Well good luck to you! I wish i had the balls to do it. I just know i'd be worried the entire time.

My sister gave birth with absolutly no pain relief whatsoever! and she has practically no pain threshold so i bet you could do it if your super determined. She said she just kept thinking she wanted to be able to do stuff strait away and it stopped her. gas and air made her vomit so she couldnt have it anyway. I know i havnt given birth yet or anything but if your that determined to go without relief, what my sister did was look up as many positions she could and then find out what wa most comfortable when your in labour? it might help :)

As long as you want. Isla was cleaned up first though since there was meconium in her waters and they had to sook it all out of her. Have to admit though I was pretty speedy getting into the shower. I was covered in blood  It's totes up to you if you don't want them cleaned or whatever and want to lay for ages, within reason though I guess.

Cleaning up Isla took about 15 mins(well that's when our first photo together is), but I can't imagine it takes more than a couple seconds in normal circumstances. It doesn't in the baby programs anyway :p All that white stuff (can't remember what it's called) is good for their skin  All they do is towel them down.

I fed Isla like 5 mins after I got her and my cuddles, I was really desperate to breastfeed

I was in labour for a while before I went to hospital, but I was still only 5cm when I got there. You can wait as long as you want, although here they want you to go in after 24 hours of your waters breaking in case of infection. You don't have to though, it's up to you ofc. I did want to wait until like the last minute, guess it's a good thing I didn't seeing as my waters never broke and the whole meconium thing.

I guess it can vary up and down the country though..

Bahh, I hated it when I said I didn't want pain relief and everyone said 'Oh wait and see hahaha!' It really wasn't bad enough I would need an epi. It's obviously different for everyone, but I mean I have the lowest pain threshold everrrr but I handled labour really well. Pretty chuffed with myself actually haha. Sorry about the massive post

I plan on going to the hospital , my mom, cousin ceara and cousin kyla will be in the delivery room. My cousin kyla is cutting the cord haha <3 and i am going to try to labor as natural as possible. I might try and get some relief off pain meds they can give to me to take the edge off but I hate needles so I am going to try and stay away from an epidural but I dont want to say I am going totally natural because if i end up needing an epi I will do it!
