Has anyone else heard of this??? The nurse at my OB was saying something about how they just got a test now that they can do a blood draw to determine the sex of baby. I didn't go too much into detail with her about how accurate it is, how it works, etc. I was more focused on my own baby as I already knew the sex... I'm just wondering if anyone else has heard of this??

It may be the Harmony test , its a test women can have instead of an amnio . I'm not 100% but it could be this one xx

I'm not too sure. I thought it was pretty interesting but obviously not enough to ask her more about it lol.

They only offer it to women to test for genetic problems like trisomys and such , and its in place of an amnio finding out the gender is kind of an after thought . Its also very expensive to do . Here it will run around 500-800 dollars and isn't always covered by insurance because its so new .

Yes, I've heard of this. It's called the Materni21 (in the US) My coworker is also pregnant and we're only 2 weeks apart. She had this test done at about 12 or 13 weeks instead of having an amnio done. It is done to see if there are any abnormalities and they can determine sex as well. This wasn't covered by my insurance and the preliminary screening for downs came back low risk, so I didn't feel the need to pay money to do it. I just waited to find out the sex later. But, yes, this test is out there. Some insurances cover it, others don't. I was told that soon all insurances will probably cover it. I was told it's relatively new.

Ooooh okay that makes sense now! I was still pretty happy actually getting to SEE my little guy when finding out the gender. Its crazy how much new technology they are coming out with! Especially since when my mom was pregnant with me they didn't even have the ultrasounds out yet! I don't think. Maybe they did but she chose not to. I don't remember. Either way. Crazy!

Its only offered privately in the uk at present and is 500 pounds . its a lot less invasive than an amnio and carys no risks as I think is a blood test . It makes me angry that they have these tests that could help so many yet at a price :( xx

It's expensive because its expensive to do the test they have to extract fetal cells from moms blood and then I'd enough to to essentially a DNA test on them.

I think most people would honestly just abuse it and use it just to fin out the gender if they could which isn't the purpose

I had the Panorama test. It tests for downs, the trisomies and gender. It said girl for me. I will find out in a week if it was accurate.

Edited, in my case the company was trying to get more people to do it, so I didn't have to pay for it. Otherwise I wouldn't have had it done. I didn't need to know the sex and my doctor will not even go with those results, even he is waiting for the scan to be sure. I also have no family history of the others so no reason for extra tests.

I had the MaterniT21 at 11 weeks because of an increased risk of downs. The test results came back in a week negative and told me it was a boy. Insurance covered most of the cost and I only paid $80 (total cost was about $2700). The blood test for trisonomies has been around for a couple years but the ability to tell the gender came out a little over a year ago.

Thats interesting! She didn't mention that it tested for all that too. I wonder if that's what they did to test me for the 4 main birth defects because they just took my blood instead of the amnio. They never told me what they thought the gender was though. No big deal either way, all is well :) Just found it interesting.

I had the Panorama test done too and the results were inconclusive after waiting 3 weeks. I assume that means they couldnt find enough of the babies dna in the blood they took from me. Im 26 weeks now so I decided not to do a re draw. I only did it because it was offered for free anyway. Plus we already knew it was a boy from 16 week ultrasound.

I did however learn that there are no false positives. It is supposto be either accurate or what they call a NO CALL, which means no results like I got.
